Not a hot take -- a fresh take. Looking at films and TV from all eras.

I tried to watch Monsoon Wedding, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere on streaming, not even for rent. Thank goodness my local library has it on DVD. Might just rewatch Mississippi Masala tonight instead.

Since the inauguration, we binge-watched Star Trek: The Next Generation – not necessarily because it's the best sci-fi around – but because this show has an unwavering commitment to protecting lives at any cost.

Since the “end cancer research” and “cut programs that save babies’ lives” and “incarcerate all brown people” MAGA crew has come to Washington DC, watching stories where human/sentient life is a priority has become a real refuge.

You'd be surprised how many mainstream – even theoretically family-friendly – movies fail this standard. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume Two (PG-13) contains an extended scene, set to peppy music, in which one of the film’s protagonists, Yondu, commits a mass murder of his former crew

Wow, high praise!
Strong writing and strong characters can really make or break a show, so I'm definitely going to have to give it a second try.
