Trains, Maps, and Maps about Trains
Looks like that spiral will add almost half a kilometer to the path, which is close to the distance of walking to next crossing on both sides... Though those have really bad connections to the actual neighborhood, so maybe the money for a bridge could be well spent for a trail along the tracks as!

Art vs the real thing

Luckily new road projects all have cycling infrastructure, like this greenfield route with two 1.5 meter wide cycle paths! OH NOOO they are just painted on... it shouldn't be allowed to describe this as a cycle path in the project overview!

I got some snow here too this morning!

In Fribourg I decided to cut the day short (due to another timetable hole I didn't consider), but not before riding the sewage funicular, which is powered by the upper car filling a tank with sewage from the upper parts of the city, pulling the lower car up by gravitation.

Did a quick turnaround in Broc-Chocolaterie, a station built only to serve the Cailler Chocolate factory museum. This line was recently regauged (from 1m to standard), and despite reducing the max incline form 5 to 4%, it feels like a rollercoaster. Heavily recommend to ride in the motor car here.

The next stop Bulle is another really modern station (was relocated a few hundred meters due to being on a curve), but for me it meant retrun to older rolling stock.

Passed through Châtel-Saint-Denis, where they recently built a new elevated through station to replace the old terminal (bottom left), saving about 3min and simplifing operations. The new development around the station is a contrast to the rest of the town, but it helps tie the station in.

I continued south along the Broye to Palézieux, where I changed to a narrow gauge train.

Payerne offered some interesting rolling stock, as well as some more Dominos. It's also home to a nice abbey in the old town to visit between trains (sadly not pictured)
November 19, 2024 at 4:19 PM
I said goodbye to the cute signal box on the first of many Dominos, that aren't around anymore in eastern Switzerland. It was also on this train that I noticed that just shifting my plan forward by one hour wasn't working, so I had to change my plans for cake in Murten to a break in Payerne.

After a first change in Lyss, I reach Kerzers, one of the most interesting station layouts in 🇨🇭. Located where two lines cross eachother, there are multiple different service and connection patterns possible here.

Started the day in Bern on track 49, which is a temporary platform due to construction of a second underpass and underground platforms that require the closure of two tracks at a time. It's the same platform as track 9/10, bur further out, enabling two trains to board at the same time.

Sunday Funday II:
9 trains through western Switzerland, scoring me three more percent on my journey to travel over the whole Swiss rail network. trip link: trainlog.me/public/tag/b...

After all this really new rolling stock, I got a nice oldie on the way down. Almost 150 years older than the train that took me up the mountain, that car was built in in 1875. Before I got down, it was already dark, but luckily it was only one more train, which I take quite often, so nothing missed.

Just missed the sun at the top by about a minute, but it truly was the most amazing sunset I witnessed in a long time. I also had enough time to take it all in, and, most importantly point back to where I was earlier.
November 14, 2024 at 3:10 PM
After another incredible multi modal transfer I could board the most futurist rolling stock there is (with an incredible foamer window in the front) and finally go back above the clouds!
November 14, 2024 at 3:10 PM
And what an incredible boat that was, looks like a luxury yacht but it's actually public transit.
November 14, 2024 at 3:10 PM
So I had to take two trains and a bus before I could get on a boat, but luckily the train station was even closer than the boat pier (that is 50 meters to the left of the station seen in the first picture). Closer transfers are possible though, as the bus - boat interchange shows.
November 14, 2024 at 3:10 PM
They also have some incredible new rolling stock with what is probably the most uncomfortable driving stand.
I on the other hand was just sad that I was back in the fog and that the boat leaving directly at the bottom of the rack railway stopped running a few weeks earlier.

The Pilatus rack railway is the steepest in the world, having two sideways gripping cogs. It's truly a marvel of engineering, climbing through very rough terrain.
November 14, 2024 at 3:10 PM
After checking the timetable on the second cable car, it became clear I sadly wouldn't make it all the way to the top of Pilatus, as it still is a bit of a walk all the way to the top. I had only time for pointing my finger at where I was going in the evening, before I had to catch my train down.
November 14, 2024 at 3:10 PM
After two more trains, a bus and a quick walk I arrived at the foot of Pilatus, where there was a 40 minute queue for the first of two cable cars waiting for me, before I finally could see the sun above the clouds.
