Imagine telling someone in 1950 that train travel across Europe will one day be the expensive alternative chosen by well-off people with environmentalist opinions, while unskilled workers will only be able to afford air tickets, and arrive in a fraction of the time.

LEGO-Aero-gami: The Art of Automatic Paper Airplane Making
_Best of BrickNerd: Weekend Highlight — Article originally published September 10, 2021._ * * * One of the most memorable MOCs I’ve seen was a LEGO robot that folded and launched paper airplanes, made by Kenjiro Nagai from Osaka University, Japan. I was lucky enough to have seen both the 2018 and 2019 versions at the Japan Brickfest. It is such a fun build, and the children in particular loved it. They would gather around the machine, wait for the planes to launch, and try to catch the planes mid-air. Sooooo cute! I recently caught up with Kenjiro, and we had a nice chat about his LEGO robots and his YouTube channel. * * * **Inez:** _Hi Kenjiro! Please tell us something about yourself. Do you still belong to Osaka University LUG? How long have you been building with LEGO?_ あなた自身について教えてください。 **Kenjiro:** I’m in the second year of a Master’s Program in Osaka University. I graduate next year. I belong to Osaka University LUG (OULUG) now, but next year I’ll have to join another LUG because OULUG mainly consists of college students. I started LEGO at three years old and used Mindstorms or Technic when I was in elementary school. Now I’m using Python to create LEGO robots using motors or sensors with Python. My main work is “Paper Airplane Maker” and it appeared on TV several times. Kenjiro with his LEGO machines. **Inez:**_I watched your YouTube channel. Your builds and robots are AMAZING! What is your favorite LEGO build that you made? Why is it your favorite?_ あなたのユーチューブチャンネルを拝見しました。 **Kenjiro:** I have several favorite builds. Here are some: Paper Airplane Maker. It has been seen by the most number of people at exhibitions, or on TV and YouTube. I was glad that they looked so happy when it was making paper airplanes. Slot Machine. Nobody has made a mechanical slot machine with LEGO, and in the category of mechanical works, it was the most difficult machine that I have ever made. I like to make moving machines so it was fun to build it while thinking about many mechanism or systems. Rubik’s Cube Solver. I wanted to build a machine which uses Python not EV3 programing because I’m studying programing in University and I felt I could make more functional robot by using Python. My favorite part is to be able to align the cube in 30 seconds. **Inez:**_I really love your paper plane robot. What inspired you to build it? How much time did it take you to build it?_ 私は紙飛行機ロボットが大好きです。 **Kenjiro:** The idea for this machine was born from “shikakegaku” which is studied in Osaka University. “Shikakegaku” is changing people’s behavior for the better using gimmicks. We wanted to solve the question “How to collect more questionnaires in shops or public facilities.” We let customers write questionnaires, then they put the paper on the machine, and then the machine makes and flies paper airplanes. It was a win-win relationship between us and the customers because we were able to retrieve many questionnaires while the customers were able to see the machine at work. As a result of our experiment, we were able to collect many questionnaires. I built the first version in three months and the second version in two months. Kenjiro’s Paper Plane Maker version 1 (top) and version 2 (bottom).. **Inez:** _Your builds look very complicated. How do you begin? Do you create the design in the computer or do you just go straight to building with LEGO?_ あなたの作品は非常に複雑に見えます。 **Kenjiro:** I have never created the design in a computer. Moving LEGO, like the Paper Airplane Maker, are very difficult to design, and I think I don’t need to create it in a computer because I feel the biggest merit of LEGO is that it can be made through trial and error. When I make a work, I try to start with the most difficult part. By doing so, it is easy to grasp the overall difficulty level. A close up of some of the folding mechanisms of the Paper Plane Maker. **Inez:** _What are you building next?_ 次に何を作る予定ですか? **Kenjiro:** I’m going to make “4x4 Rubik’s Cube Solver”. And in the future, I want to make a robot like a 3D printer that builds a small LEGO car or house or etc.**** 4x4のルービックキューブをそろえるロボットを制作中です。 9x9 Rubik’s Cube Solver, also by Kenjiro. **Inez:** _Do you have advice for those who want to build LEGO robots?_ LEGOロボットを作りたい人へのアドバイスはありますか? **Kenjiro:** I think the important thing in making a high-quality robot is not to try to make it all at once, but to make it from a prototype first. Especially for robots with complicated movements, it is almost impossible to make a perfect one from the beginning, and it is not possible to grasp all the problems at once, too. By making a prototype, problems and points to be aware of will be made clear, and the risk of failure when remaking can be greatly reduced. It is recommended that you disassemble all the prototypes you made once, except for the parts that you think are already perfect. This is because if there are many remaining parts, the degree of freedom in assembling will be reduced during the second production. The appeal of LEGO is that it is tolerant of failure, so please do your best without fear of failure. **Inez:** _Thank you so much, Kenjiro! Your work is truly amazing and I hope to see you again in Japan soon!_ 謙次朗さんありがとうございました!
