Happy 109th Birthday to our National Park Service! President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Organic Act establishing the agency. We are lucky to have four National Parks in Colorado: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and Great Sand Dunes.

The next trans person we wish to celebrate is Lynn Conway. Fired from IBM when she announced her plans to transition, she went on to be a pioneer in modern computing and chip design. After living in stealth mode for 31 years, Conway also became a prominent trans activist.

Continuing with lifting up trans voices, Wendy Carlos helped with the development of the Mood synthesizer. She was the first transgender recipient of a Grammy Award, worked on several film scores, and is even a published photographer.

Medicare and Medicaid were signed into law by Pres. LBJ on this day in 1965. Medicaid was created to provide medical insurance for adults and children with limited income and resources. Medicare was to provide it to adults 65+ (later expanded to people with disabilities).

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law. It provided civil rights for people with physical and mental disabilities- guaranteeing accommodations and services. Signed into law by Pres. George HW Bush - it had widespread bipartisan support.
