This Bald Eagle with the #staredown expression seemed annoyed that I was watching her eat breakfast after she nabbed a red fish from the Bay of Islands near Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

Muscovy Ducks come in two types, wild and domesticated. With warty faces and webbed claws, they nest in trees.
These two #DucksOutOfWater appear to be the same sex (males ~2x larger), so no ducklings, ugly or otherwise forthcoming here.

On Vigur Island, off the north coast of Iceland, during a July 2024 visit, so many puffins (and other migratory birds) flitted about on shore it was challenging to capture one of these highly sociable and energetic birds alone in profile.

Since I'll never capture a jet flying across the moon three nights in a row, twice will have to do!
While not a true full moon, this image has better surface detail, which the hot jet trail blurs. Yes, it’s the little things we obsess over.

Living close to RDU airport provides occasional opportunities to photograph airplanes passing in front of the full moon during takeoff, but this high-flier unexpectedly transited while I was waiting for thin clouds to pass.

This male Northern Cardinal settled on the rim of our freshly filled bird bath and sipped unhurriedly. No interest in a bath. As I pondered why, he turned to stare at me, and I swear his look says, “Doesn't this crest look perfect already?”

After 10 minutes enlarging a hole, this Red-bellied Woodpecker pulled out and checked the late sun, which seemed to cue his quitting time. He stopped and flew away. My camera timestamp showed 5:31 pm. With the bird gone, it was my quitting time, too.

At Denali National Park in Alaska, most birds have flown south by mid-September, followed shortly by most humans.
This Canada Jay is one of the year-rounders, popping up on our hike a few days after the first snowfall.

Late July to September is when adult dragonflies are most numerous—seemingly nature’s accommodation to bird photographers when their favored winged subjects begin to migrate by night and are less visible by day.

Hummingbirds don’t stay perched long in one spot, so I was lucky to find this Ruby-throated hummer resting on a twig and catch the liftoff.

You’ve heard of a swan dive, but a heron dive?
After an awkward but acrobatic leap over several tree branches, this Great Blue's enormous wings converted the downward dive into forward flight.

Caught this image of the waxing crescent moon July 28, as twilight drifted into night.
I like how the light’s angle and nature’s hazy filter bring out the surface details, making the moon look like driftwood — or a fossilized banana!

Turkey Vultures, nature’s airborne janitorial crew, are undeniably ugly up front.
But their wingspan and flight are majestic as they patrol the skies sniffing out the important but dirty work they do on the ground.

Solitude did not diminish its perfection.

Some find House Finches drab, but they’re always there when you need them—like when the afternoon light is just right in your backyard.
Unlike their flashier cousins, you don’t have to travel to the Galapagos to shoot them (although I’d like to).
