they brought her, when still a child, to the Temple in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. Later versions tell us that Mary was taken to the Temple at around the age of 3 in fulfilment of a vow. Tradition held that she was to remain there to be educated in preparation for her role as Mother of God.

He wrote the Gospel According to Luke, much of which was based on the teachings and writings of Paul, interviews with early Christians, and his own experiences. He also penned a history of the early Church in the Acts of the Apostles.

He met Saint Paul the Apostle at Troas. Together they evangelized Greece and Rome. He was there for the shipwreck and other perils of the voyage to Rome, and stayed in Rome for Paul‘s two years in prison.

The arresting officers tried to burn Reparata alive, but a miraculous rainshower doused the flames. They tried to make her drink boiling resin, but she refused to renounce her faith. Frustrated by her steadfast loyalty to Jesus, the persecutors beheaded Reparata.

Francis died in 1226. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on July 16, 1228.

He lived with animals, did manual labor, cleaned churches, and even fed thieves.
While in meditation on Mount Alvernia in the Apennines in September 1224, Francis received the stigmata, which periodically bled during the remaining two years of his life.

His way of life attracted followers in 1209, and, with a papal blessing, Francis founded the Franciscans based on Jesus’ statement, “Leave all and follow me.” Francis composed songs and hymns to God and nature.

He wore rough clothing, begged for his daily survival, and preached. His family did not appreciate this, more so his father who disinherited him. At this point, Francis renounced earthly riches. He visited the sick and treated everyone as his siblings.

When he became a prisoner of war, he had a conversion experience, including a reported message from Christ calling him to leave this worldly life. Upon release, Francis began taking his faith seriously.
The Gospels became his rule of life, with Jesus as his role model.

On April 5, 1883, Pope Leo XIII raised the feast to the rank of a double major. Since 1976, it has taken the rank of a memorial.

Ferdinand of Austria requested that it be extended to all areas in the Holy Roman Empire.
Initially placed after the feast of Michael the Archangel, it was seen as a kind of supplement to that date. Pope Clement X elevated the feast, celebrated Oct. 2, to an obligatory double for the whole Church.
