Complexity was seen in a negative way in the 90s. Fortunately, complex networks came along to show that John Horgan was wrong in his book "The End of Science". Complexity is not just a metaphor.

I've just finished reading this monumental book. It deals with the origins of inequality and the influence of Native American culture on Western thought. The authors challenge everything we know about the origins of agriculture, property, cities, democracy, slavery and civilisation itself.

A book that, although a little old, is still very useful for understanding complex systems. I studied this book many years ago, when I was still a PhD student, and I still use it in my classes. It's available for free online.
