Mom, wife, former teacher. Puerto Rican born on the island, raised in the diaspora, and finally back home.
Yesterday my kid and my husband made pancakes for breakfast and I got this note. 🥰 (also, someone is clearly growing up Spanish/English bilingual)

When I think about the best part of living in Puerto Rico again, the end of seasonal depression is high on my list.

Bienvenida a la familia Rosie. Ella apareció en el portón de casa y no había forma de dejarla sola afuera.

We said goodbye to the absolute best cat in the world today. Julius was the loudest purrer & the most patient cat. When my daughter was a baby, he would stay beside her and watch over her. She’d lay her head on his belly and he’d purr. Julius you are so loved and we are thankful that you were ours.

This is Julius. When we first brought him home, he developed an upper respiratory infection and the vet told me that it was very possible that he wouldn’t make it. But he did. Twelve years later he’s really sick and I’m so afraid to lose him. He’s the absolute best cat.

I’ve been learning Haitian Creole on Duolingo and it’s been full of fun translations like “Paris the fashion capitol but the French learn from Haiti, Martinique, and Guadalupe”. 10/10 highly recommend.

Todos estamos conectados, queramos o no. Este fin de semana y frente a una nueva ofensiva contra el pueblo palestino, estos mensajes me tocaron más que nunca.

I haven’t eaten a hot dog in decades, but I’d like to submit the Puerto Rican hot dog for consideration.
It is served at any time of day, usually from a cart though food trucks are also serving them now.

I hate when my calendar gives me such appropriate words for the times we live in.

My reproductive system doesn’t produce eggs and hasn’t done it for a long time. What does HHS do with that?

There are many reasons why we came back to Puerto Rico: the longing for connection, the desire for our daughter to maintain her Spanish, the fight against the continued invasion of the island. But also, the seasonal affective disorder that made me think that I might not survive another winter.

When you try to pull colonizer shit in a US colony you should expect resistance. The Federation of Teachers of Puerto Rico handing out literature to tell families to protect their neighbors and themselves from the feds and our governor.
