(5/6) This reveals a striking dimension of emotion regulation: that many adolescents sometimes engage in self-destructive behaviors not to escape negative emotions, but to amplify them. Implications for these findings can be found in our manuscript.

(4/6) We found that: (1) contra-hedonic functions are not just present but prevalent, (2) contra-hedonic functions are most common for NSSI, and (3) contra-hedonic functions are consistently associated with a desire to self-punish.

(3/6)...*pro*-hedonic motivations for these behaviors- i.e., how people use them to feel *better.* However, we were curious if people ever use these behaviors to feel *worse* given that even healthy people voluntarily pursue activities that induce negative emotions.

(2/6) Usually we think of people as being motivated to feel good- in research, practice & everyday life. But we know that people also do things to feel bad- like listening to sad music/watching scary movies.
