Hardwearing-wise, I recently wore a pair of L&Y Alexas to get a hose through a foot-wide gap between a very prickly hedge and a barn in the pouring rain. They came out undamaged and therefore the winner and my skin was also undamaged. V sturdy cotton.

I wear Lucy and Yak and Seasalt, mostly - in L&Y styles where they don’t do petite length, they still look nice rolled up, and their Alexa trousers do well for smart with a longer top if you size down. Oliver Bonas are also good. (I am 5’2” for reference)
