Defence and foreign affairs not in the top ten worries, people have larger cares
top 10 issues concerning citizens in New Zealand and Australia, based on an Ipsos survey conducted in mid-2025. It highlights both common concerns and areas where the two countries diverge in their priorities. Inflation / cost of living is the primary concern for both nations, with around 60% of both populations selecting it. Housing is a significantly greater concern in Australia (44%) than in New Zealand (22%). The economy and unemployment are more pressing issues for New Zealanders compared to Australians. Immigration is a higher concern in Australia, while climate change and education are more top-of-mind for New Zealanders.

Public ratings of government performance have reached another new low in the latest IPSOS Issues Monitor survey. The government rating of 3.9 out of 10 is the lowest since the survey began in September 2017, and reflects about 45 percent of respondents giving between 0 and 3. Another 31 percent gave a rating of 4-6, while 23 percent gave 7-10, and 2 percent said they didn't know. The government previously dipped to 4.2 in the February survey, hovering around the same level in May and August. The Labour Party is rated as more capable of managing seven of the top eight concerns for New Zealanders. Labour leads National on the issues of inflation/cost of living, healthcare, the economy, housing, unemployment, and poverty/inequality. The National Party is considered more capable of handling only one issue: crime/law & order. This poll marks the first time since 2021 that Labour has been considered more able to handle the cost of living and the economy. The "Wrong track" sentiment consistently polled higher than the "Right Direction" sentiment across all months shown. The "Wrong track" opinion peaked at 62% in October 2023, just before a noted "Change in government". The "Right Direction" opinion reached its lowest point at 38% in October 2023. After the government change, the "Wrong track" percentage decreased from its peak, while the "Right Direction" percentage increased. Labour is seen as most capable of managing 9 out of 13 listed issues, including education, race relations, drug/alcohol abuse, taxation, household debt, population, transport, and petrol prices. The Green Party is viewed as most capable of managing climate change and environmental pollution/water concerns. National is considered most capable of handling defence/foreign affairs/terrorism. Te Pati Māori is seen as most capable of managing issues facing Māori.

That, at least, would allow him to negotiate from a position of greater strength with National after the election than if he unreservedly refused to talk coalition turkey with Labour. It will be worth watching how he treats Hipkins and Labour, and vice versa, in the next few months. Coalition-building aside, assets sales themselves are problematic. As is Luxon’s faux-naïve call for a mature debate without the politics about the best use of the Crown’s asset base – and whether that should include the sale or recycling of assets. It is hard to see anything that has been more political over the years than asset sales, and it is harder still to see a single policy or formula covering the “best interests of the country” that could be derived from the wide range of political views in the marketplace. What should be the principles of such a policy? Maintain those assets with good commercial growth prospects? Those with monopoly characteristics? Hold those that provide essential public services? Preserve assets that build New Zealand’s national identity? Maintain, enhance or run down the value of the asset pool? How much should be used to pay down debt? And are assets sales a better option for solving structural balance sheet issues than the two other legs of the fiscal trilemma – growth and increased revenue? The list of issues is as long as the number of assets the Government owns, and in the political context can probably only be resolved one by one, not by some overarching algorithm, even a dry one derived by Treasury wonks. Which means no change to the status quo other than the straw in the wind that National in 2026 plans to dump the blanket moratorium on asset sales of its 2023 campaign to open the door an unspecified width. Even that would be a hard sell. Despite the unpopularity of his decision, then-prime minister John Key got away with the partial sale of the three electricity gentailers because his poll support was about 50%. Luxon and National have no such buffer, even with the backing of asset-sale-ophiles in the Act Party. On this week’s polling, Labour and the Greens clearly outweigh National and Act. Add in opposition from NZ First and Te Pāti Maori, and on the political level a bipartisan, politics-free asset sales debate (leaving aside the possibility of a policy ever springing from that) is fanciful. It might be simpler to call for a mature, politics-free debate on fairer revenue-raising by taxing all forms of income, including capital gains. But maybe Luxon is keeping his powder dry on that one.

It’s the first law of political thermodynamics. If a brushfire breaks out in public, however big it seems to be, the real scale of the conflagration will be 2 to the power of X times bigger. So it follows that behind the extraordinary attack this week by Foreign Minister and NZ First leader Winston Peters on National’s talk of asset sales as “tawdry and silly”, spiced up with criticisms of the Coalition’s inability to get the economy moving quickly enough, is a fire in the Beehive that threatens to set the place alight. It has, or course, been smouldering for a long time, and there were other recent signs the flames are beginning to lick higher. Not least was the “I” versus “we” spat that broke out between Peters and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon over how the credit for the Government’s overseas successes should be shared. This week in the House Peters – for no other reason – decided to move government procedural motions in the form of “we move” rather than “I move”. Luxon fueled the feud by reminding Peters – in light of his criticisms over the economy – that decisions are made by all Cabinet ministers round the table: We. By implication, Peters shares any blame for the economic performance. As the woo-woo team-builders used to say, there is no “i” in “teams”. But there are clearly two “i” s in “coalition”. Peters’ attacks on the Coalition’s economic record, as well as his willingness to hand the Opposition a weapon just to make his point, is Campaign Kryptonite for the Opposition to wield, in any other week would have hogged the headlines for days. Quite rightly it was overshadowed – if that’s the right word - by the egregious and anti-constitutional police behaviour brought to light by the Independent Police Conduct Authority’s report and by the messy and unresolved meltdown in Te Pāti Māori, which saw two of its six MPs expelled, two others in limbo and the party’s future in severe doubt. But make no mistake; Peters’ “no asset sales, sunshine” line (my words not his, but his words if you know what I mean) on Morning Report is an important inflection point, not least in the attitudes the coalition parties will bring to the campaign. Add National’s likely reprised campaign on changes to superannuation – anathema to Peters – and there are two “third rail” issues that National touches at its peril. Peril not only from voter reactions, but for future coalition building. At best the issues will be left on the post-election negotiating-room floor. At worst, they will be key roadblocks to a deal with Peters that do not exist on the other side of the aisle. With poll support for the governing and opposition blocs on a knife edge the last thing you would think National should do is push NZ First towards Labour. Unless (speculation alert) it is trying to win back Act votes to bolster its numbers as Labour ekes out a persistent lead. On Peters’ side is he preparing wriggle room for a deal with either National or Labour, as he has before? He has ruled out Labour under Hipkins, but what if National insisted in the election campaign on smashing a couple of his icons – no asset sales and no changes to superannuation entitlements? Would he, as least on the hustings, find a way to parlay his position into a more equivocal one “in the interest of NZ”?

So we've had an explanation for how the McSkimming's emails did not reach the police minister Mark Mitchell, but how was it that the McSkimming's emails did not reach Christopher Luxon, allegedly prime minster? Oh I l see, it's "nothing and that's normal" #NZPol
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s email account was also the recipient of about 10 anonymous messages in December 2023 and January 2024 that made allegations against the former deputy Police Commissioner. Luxon confirmed to the Herald his office received emails relating to McSkimming in late December 2023 and early January 2024. A number of groups were copied into these, including politicians, police and media. He highlighted that the IPCA, among the recipients, responded to one of the emails on January 4, 2024. It informed the sender how they could make a complaint. The IPCA report says further information was later provided, but it then received an email asking for the case to be closed at that point. Asked whether his office took no action on receipt of those emails, Luxon responded: “Very normal. If the police hadn’t received those exchanges as well, we would refer it on to the police. “That’s our normal process. In this case, the police and the IPCA had received them as well as a number of ministers and also media, and the IPCA, as you saw in the report, had responded.”

Collins’s sensitivity to criticism was remarkable, and eventually pathetic. The baseless accusations that she levelled against reporter Katie Bradford, during her hiss and tell with Sabin, brought her to Key’s door for those “long conversations” and his gentle recommendation that she get the hell away from Parliament before he launches next week’s budget. Stress leave, gardening leave – she’ll probably take that literally, because she’s been working on putting in a new garden at her Maraetai home for the past few months. “I’ve put in the herb garden already and it’s hanging from the walls outside the front door,” she’d said when we met. “They’re beautiful. Very, very smart.”

The young woman charged under digital harassment laws for making sex allegations against former deputy police commissioner Jevon McSkimming is still facing prosecution over alleged abusive emails sent to the detective who investigated her, the Herald can reveal. Instead of investigating whether the sex claims could be corroborated or not, police used the anonymous emails as evidence to prosecute her for a harassment campaign against McSkimming. She was arrested and charged under the Harmful Digital Communications Act in May 2024, placed under restrictive bail conditions and silenced by wide-ranging suppression orders. The failure by the highest-ranking police officers in New Zealand to investigate the woman’s repeated allegations has been criticised in a bombshell investigation by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) released this week.

Mitchell said he had recently learnt that former police commissioner Andrew Coster instructed staff in the minister’s office not to share emails about McSkimming with the minister, or anyone else. They were told to send the emails directly, and only, to Coster’s chief of staff.
