Then he pivoted into running his own for profit AI company in order to compete, while suing OpenAI under the guise that they defrauded him.

So it's no surprise that he's now building xAI as a for profit entity with him under full control.
It's clear from the emails here that he knows that openAI can't compete with Google and others without outside investment. He just hedged his bets. And he lost.

Elon likes to make it appear that he just can't stand the thought of building a for-profit AI company within OpenAI, but, really, he's more concerned about ceding a bunch of control and profit to the people building it.
