Less important, but very interesting, is how ‘Strange Days’ anticipated so well the culture which would emerge from everyone having small pocket cellphones that they just feel natural to a contemporary viewer rather than science fictional, as it was at the time.

< thread >
Back when Kathryn Bigelow's #StrangeDays first came out, in 1995, people thought it was too Dystopian, too harsh. Like, it didn't depict LA in flames, but the racial & sociopolitical tensions & sociotechnical predations were stark & jarring.

These days it looks like it might've been too optimistic.

Reposting this thread b/c it's Canada Day and we could all use a little self-awareness in our patriotism today.

There's lots to celebrate about Canada.
There's also lots that's absolutely not worth celebrating (which we must in fact reconcile).
Choose 20 Canadian paintings that have stayed with you or influenced you - one Canadian painting per day for 20 days, in no particular order.

Dear CBC: If it’s “nearly 1 in 5” Albertans would vote to separate, that means over 80% of the province WOULD NOT. Quit framing things for a fringe minority of dimwits caught in their own rage loop. #abpoli #cdnpoli

Greenhouse gas emissions from Alberta's oilsands have also continued to set new records.

They hit 86.5 megatonnes in the latest National Inventory Report.

(By comparison: Quebec's *total* emissions were 78.9 megatonnes that year.)

There are so many good threads on alt text.

This is a really straight-forward introduction.
But also, never forget, if you're posting a screenshot of text (eg a magazine or website page) that also needs alt text and many apps enable you to copy-paste the text directly.

Forgot to repost something extremely cool that the Guardian did, which is an extremely direct form of public service that deserves to be recognized.
This is cool. The Guardian recreated a searchable climate future risk tool (wildfire, extreme heat, drought, hurricane, and coastal flood) for the US that was developed by FEMA but deleted by the Trump administration’s ‘climate’ purge.

Today the BC carbon tax has been removed. It's unfortunate that a simple climate policy had become so politicized.

Talk about ironic timing: our paper on the CO2 response to carbon pricing just came out in the April issue of Energy Economics. Hot off the press, cold in the policy grave. #Econsky

@ctvnewsottawa.bsky.social demonstrates such lack of journalistic integrity that we know they'd herald a Trump-style dictator- to avoid "difficulty" of fact-checking

CTV caves to tyranny, violating 1st rule:

"Do not obey in advance"

Email, call, tweet, skeet: #BringBackRachel #cdnpoli #polcan
It’s stunning how the Executive Producer acknowledges she knows the hate Rachel has to deal with, but says CTV — a large news organization — doesn’t have the “bandwidth” to deal with it, so cuts ties with Rachel and continues to leave her to deal with it on her own. Shameful isn’t even the word.

By eliminating USAID and gutting global humanitarian aid, the eugenics freaks who hide behind the veil of “long-termism” and “utilitarianism” are getting exactly what they want: the mass death of people they view as unnecessary.

HOLY SHIT this makes me so happy. It’s just for songwriting for now as far as I can tell not for production or anything else yet, but man I cannot WAIT to find out what songs get suspended and how many
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) now requires artists to declare if AI was used in the creation of a song.

Songs involving AI will not be eligible for copyright registration and if AI use is falsely denied, KOMCA may suspend royalties or remove the work.
