@footesea.bsky.social
I work in environmental social marketing (NOT social media!) and am a mix of behavioral scientist & conservation practitioner. Based at Social Marketing @ Griffith University in Brisbane QLD, after working in marine conservation in Hawaii over 20 yrs.
There’s a bunch of ways to connect with the SCB Conservation Marketing @scbconsmark.bsky.social working group, and today at #ICCB2025 we announced the first consmark conference since 2021 will be held online during the first week of December 2025! Stay tuned for more!

Legend! 🏆 @meg-shaw.bsky.social not only used memes in her #ICCB2025 talk but showed us the research supporting their effectiveness! Humour and beautifully-designed slides FTW!

#ICCB2025 @meg-shaw.bsky.social: Avoid using photos of ourselves interacting with (especially touching) wildlife b/c it makes others want to do it too & think wildlife would make a good pet & also that the species is less under threat. Plus 41% don’t read IG captions (ie researchers “explaining”)

#ICCB2025 “Please let other people know this group exists!” - current Participatory & Citizen Science working group prez John Cigliano

There’s an open call for nominations for board members. A top priority is to document conservation impact from successful projects.

Stoked to see so many #ICCB2025 delegates posting here! 🤙 Appreciate the opportunity to present in the Participatory & Citizen Science session on behalf of my team; I shared some takeaways on volunteer engagement & retention within a koala citizen science context. And some memes.

Stoked to see our paper amongst the top cited @ Journal of Social Marketing over the past year! Thanks everyone! 🤙 Says a lot for the discipline and its commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

I’ll repost some threads by our team which include the links to download it. 🧵⬇️

Always appreciate the “theory to practice” theme, and @TaylorWillmott @rundlesr & Jess Harris brought it to #ANZMAC2022! Wish I could have played “theory bingo” in person along with you guys!

Great #ANZMAC2022 presentation, @YousefMurooj! Awesome to see #socmar applied to this issue!

what really made my night after the Brisbane Koala Forum was meeting self-proclaimed “Crazy Koala Lady” Denise-who brought some scats for Carney-and getting to see the passion & enthusiasm as they talked koalas and swapped photos! 🐨❤️

Wrapped up the Brisbane Koala Forum with a Q&A and panel discussion. What a great event, thanks to all the fantastic speakers for sharing the amazing work you do to protect koalas! 🤙🐨❤️ @SMGriffith1

Great tips from QLD Dept of Environment & Science on how to help 🐨🐨; it’s especially important to participate in public consultation opportunities and have your say

Enjoyed hearing several compelling stories of Queensland Koala Crusaders’ efforts to work with private landholders to take action and establish more 🐨 habitat & create movement corridors on their land

Jun Zhou, Assoc. Prof @Griffith_Uni shared the cool camera trap tech that’s being used (along with satellites, AI, & volunteer support) to reduce vehicle strikes of koalas via smart road signage (also super cool!)
February 4, 2025 at 2:22 PM
At the Brisbane Koala Forum we learned of numerous strategies being supported by Brisbane City Council to help 🐨 such as land bridges, underpasses, fencing, and driver awareness programs, aka WMS or “Wildlife Movement Solutions” (gotta have an acronym!)

Sobering stats from QLD RSPCA; #1 reason for admission is disease and #2 is vehicle strikes; but koalas admitted with all types of injuries together outnumber those with disease. Sad outcomes with 54% euthanised vs 29% released. There are ways to help however! 🐨❤️

Before @Griffith_Uni Assoc. Prof Carny Matheson shared about an innovative environmental education & citizen science program to make koala family trees by mailing in scats (yes you can!), he showed us two koalas across the street from where we’re holding the Brisbane Koala Forum!

apparently even many locals don’t realise koalas are amongst us in urban areas; “Just because you haven’t seen one doesn’t mean it’s not there.”

Before I moved to Australia and started working @SMGriffith1 on a koala threat mitigation project I didn’t realise they were commonly found in urban areas! About to kick off the Brisbane Koala Forum and there happens to be 🐨🐨 right across from the venue! #WildlifeWatcherAU

Love connecting with people IRL and saying “I feel like I already know you!” (via Twitter), right @MarineSciComm?
