The world can be much better. This article is somewhere north of hopepunk - maybe just hopeful or even promising? Maybe it'll cheer you up in a constructive way, too: ourworldindata.org/much-better-.... H/T @whitep4nth3r.com whose newsletter (buttondown.com/weirdwideweb...) is always tasty.
The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better.
It is wrong to think these three statements contradict each other. We need to see that they are all true to see that a better world is possible.

Did you know Amazon is turning off "download-ability" of the content you've purchased from them, starting tomorrow?
(cf news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4307...) It's not too late to back up what you've bought! This is the tool I used: github.com/treetrum/ama... (h/t @calavera.dev ).

Portland! If you're interested in bicycle touring, a few others and I are giving presentations about past adventures tonight (Thurs 20 Feb) at Migration on North Williams. I'll speak first, at 630p. Hope to see you there!

12 hours into civilization 7 and it's twice now crashed and lost hours of work each time. Really pretty, but really poor quality experience on the PlayStation overall. Will I learn to save more often, or will I learn it's not worth my time to keep playing?

has anyone ever sold their twitter handle to a stranger, and if so, how did you handle the handoff (so you got your money and they got their handle)? I think I'm ready!

Give yourself a Christmas present and just delete some stressful old email you don't want to respond to. Kudos to my therapist for that gift!

It was a privilege to be a small but early part of this revolution. Thanks so much for all of the safety, @letsencrypt.bsky.social !
Honestly, the Let's Encrypt folks don't get nearly enough credit for basically protecting the entire fucking internet, by making it absolute bog standard to encrypt everything. It happened so fast and so many people were skeptical.
VPN vendors have huge budgets to advertise on your favorite podcasts.

We don't have marketing for the IETF, browser and OS security teams, CAs (Let's Encrypt), CDNs, researchers, open source authors, website builders, digital rights activists...

We made the web secure and didn't tell anyone.

Don't forget to laugh out loud sometime. Even in dark times, there is still some funny ha-ha amidst the funny uh-oh, and laughter has power to move your mind to a place where you can see a brighter future, and help you carry on.

Every morning, rain or shine, I take a walk around wherever I am. I struggle to sit and meditate, but I enjoy walking & it hits a lot of the same chords - and helps wake the body up, too. I then get to check "make steps goal" off of my todo list for a nice dopamine boost to start the day.

One of my oldest friends (from high school times) wrote to me today after losing touch for about a decade. We are reconnecting, and it is heartwarming and delightful! I bet one of your friends from the past would love to hear from you. It's not awkward at all, and now is a great time to reach out!
