Another lunch at Truck Stop Café.

Rachael got her usual, a classic burger and fries.

I got a picture of the weekly lunch specials, and decided to try one of their Chinese dishes, the Tuesday special: sweet and sour pork with chow mein and fried rice AND daily soup.

Stopped in at Columbus Meat Market today.

Didn’t buy the stuffed quail but they look so cute.

At home shot of rolled Italian meatloaf I did buy. Ground beef, bread crumbs, cheese, arugula, pancetta.

Brown, then finish by braising in tomato sauce in the oven.

Truck Stop Café yesterday for lunch: all day breakfast, the Truck Stop Chef’s Special: scrambled eggs with cheddar, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, white toast, hash browns (house made potatoes, just so nice and crisp).

The diner coffee is surprisingly good, too.

On Clark at Napier in East Van.

Found a German leek tart recipe that has a touch of sexism in the description.

Apparently this is great to eat with wine from the region. And not only men like wine drinking!

“The female sex also enjoys such pleasures, especially in this age of emancipation”

My code name is Max Umami.

I use miso a lot to round out flavouring. Also a tube of anchovy paste.

From Cook’s Illustrated Nov - Dec 2023.

Less pretty, but did end up salt roasting turkey breast and legs.

With the Win Full Ramen that I posted about, I’ve been making quick soups for lunch.

Here’s pulled pork, 1 Tbsp gochujang, cherry tomatoes, carrots, & shallots. Finished with a splash of sesame oil.

Spicy & flavourful, and in no way “ramen” other than the noodles!

Here’s a wall of syrups and teas and candy made from good stuff and coffee things, to show just one shelf.

There was this one lone ProSyro syrup (we get Yuzu and Kalamansi from Welk’s). What is Falernum syrup?

Went to Mucker Next Door for the first time.

It’s “next door” to and run by Dachi, who also run Elephant and Hanai.

Food / syrups / local / lifestyle home stuff is the closest I can get to a type of store.

This reminded me of a fantastic espresso tonic “flight” I tasted last July in Paris at Fringe Coffee & Photography Gallery.

Photo is of the two kinds of tonics. The server came and poured the espresso shots & stirred table side.

This did turn into baked bread. Letting it cool, then I’ll know.

Will I eat some slices slathered in melted butter regardless of how it turns out? Yes!

Got a good rise. I don’t really have proper sized loaf pans so let’s see what happens after a second rise.

Can you tell I’m not a baker??!!

These are mini cucumbers.

Cucumbers in the back have some hot banana peppers, the third one has hot banana peppers and some red bell peppers since I cleaned up the fridge and needed to use up the pickling juice.

Will sour the next couple of days and then go in the fridge.

Final delicious meal in Nanaimo now documented.

Mahle House is actually in Cedar, just south of Nanaimo, and has been doing farm to table in an old heritage house for decades.

Le Louis Cyr 🧀

Cellar aged for 2 years. Creamy, crumbly, firm. Slightly sweet burnt caramel & roasted nut flavour. Very tasty.

This was sitting next to various Goudas and yes it’s similar in flavour.

Le Riopelle de l’Isle 🧀

From the Isle-Aux-Grues (Crane Island) in the St. Lawrence, this fabulous rich & creamy creation named after a French artist who lived on the island. Unpasteurized cow’s milk with a smooth buttery taste, with hints of mushrooms and hazelnuts.
