Continuing the occasional series of vintage and strangely inappropriate greetings cards for Thanksgiving...

I would suggest that perhaps "For a Happy Thanksgiving" you should not issue your small child with a large axe and tell them to forage for their own dinner.

It’s been a while since the last CHAPBOOK TUESDAY post.

This beautiful example is from the 1810 edition of Red Riding Hood held by @britishlibrary.bsky.social

What makes this unusual are the colour images. These would have been hand painted in each copy, usually by women or children

For those of you who have been fans of vintage holiday card strangeness in the past …

As friends over the water head towards Thanksgiving, we can celebrate the joy of turkeys with an eclectic range of vintage greetings cards.

Take care if you are driving to your family in a sweetcorn car on 27th.

Today, November 16th, is the anniversary of the first newspaper report detailing a sighting of Mothman.

It appeared in the Point Pleasant Register as front page news in 1966.

Was the sighting down to out of place migrating herons? Or cranes?

Or was it something else?

Oh, good call! Here’s a screen grab of the movie in question. What do people think? Surely too similar to be coincidence?

Happy Halloween!

Keep a close eye out today for witches being driven around the countryside by their root vegetable chauffeurs in a hollowed out marrow car.

Apple bobbing is the subject of today’s vintage Halloween postcard.

The tradition of bobbing for apples probably (not not definitely) comes from Roman times, being later woven into Samhain rituals.

A girl who placed the apple she bobbed under her pillow would hope to dream of her love to be.

A vintage Halloween card with a smattering of folklore hidden among the costumes, but even more weirdness.

The ghost is reminiscent of white sheeting, the origin of which comes from winding shrouds.

The child resembles Newfoundland mummering

The bloke at the back made no effort at all!

I have spent a portion of my morning writing about folklore in relation to Mr Burns' depiction as a 'sexy mermaid'...

The book that this is for, PARANORMAL SIMPSONS, by myself and pop culture commentator Murray Ferguson will come out with @crossedcrowbooks.bsky.social

I don't just do Scooby-Doo!

Titanic Museum Belfast is built to resemble the ship, and @maryrosemuseum.bsky.social in Portsmouth is similarly shippy.

But neither have quite the look of your giant basket!

Early 20th century Halloween postcards loved a verse. This one references the history behind the tradition of fancy dress at this time. This comes from guising, where people would try and avoid the ghosts and spirits of All Hallows through disguise. That fed into what we now do on October 31.
October 27, 2025 at 8:41 AM
The heyday of exchanging halloween postcards was between 1900 and 1920 and the bizarre images often had a folkloric tale to tell.

These anthropomorphic cabbages allude to divination recorded in Scotland and Ireland where the shape of a pulled cabbage stalk denoted the figure of your future love!

Talking of witches, would you like us to come and chat about this one some time? Whilst being regional, it covers a time period which is rarely looked at in terms of the subject. Endorsements from Ronald Hutton and Marion Gibson were favourable!

The Witches of Essex with @profaliceroberts.bsky.social is excellent, but why does it play on stereotypes of rural stupidity by having the women in the recreations speak with a West Country accent. They are in Essex and the South West does not equal ignorant peasantry. It’s a bit sad to hear.
