It’s amazing how many people in positions of influence, both in Congress and in the media, fail to grasp that the normal practices of politics are no longer adequate. In normal times a shutdown is a disaster, but it pales in comparison to shredding the Constitution, alliances, and democracy itself.
Schumer: "I supported what the House did to vote against this bill universally, but that didn't cause a shutdown. It's different in the Senate. I knew people were gonna disagree with me but I thought so strongly that the shutdown would be the greatest disaster we face ... "
