Can someone, please, explain to me like I'm five, why it's okay for Jim to starve because he's standing on green, when Gary, who is next to Jim, but standing on blue, has more than can be consumed before it goes bad?

A serious, but naive question: why is Israel so important to the US? Why is antisemitism a more egregious instance of racism (?) than ... <Insert race here>? Is it? Why are Palestinians so vilified? Why is killing them okay? As a pale, privileged, American male, I have never really groked that.
