I’m back! And starting to catch up.

Recovering nicely and spent a little time with the palm trees

Just found my notes from the day I got a call from the NIH’s Undiagnosed Disease Network, telling me I’d been accepted to the program and that they had a dx they’d like to test.

First time I’d ever heard of FND.

Written in my notebook for the intro neuroscience book (Bear et al) I was working thru

Friends with functional seizures: please consider participating in this important study!

University of Sheffield researchers are working to develop a seizure severity measure for folks w FND seizures.

Details below - please share!

Feedback I've heard from folks with FND so far has run similarly - "we're not wild about it, but yeah, OK. Good enough."

Given the substantial diversity of opinion, that seems like a win to me.

Now let's move on to working out improved diagnostics and treatments for this debilitating condition.

First, the background:

Functional / dissociative seizures are an extremely brutal neurological condition.

Science has known about them since at least the 1800s. They were known back then (grossly) as "Hysteria," an umbrella label that incorporated other functional disorders too.

Hey folks.

ILAE's International Epilepsy Congress is now concluded (great meeting!), so I thought I'd share a few highlights from my talk on Functional / Dissociative Seizures (FDS).

The full talk (and recording) belong to ILAE, but here are some of the key points!

Excellent talk by Sarah Barnard (hope I’m spelling correctly) on the Human Epilepsy Project.

Very interesting review of neuropsychiatric risk factors - once again “neurological” and “psychiatric” risk factors are together in the brain.

We nailed it. Great work everyone and thanks for having me on the panel!

I’ll be speaking on the (new!) terminology of Functional / Dissociative Seizures today at ILAE’s International Epilepsy Conference.

4:45 Lisbon time.

See if you can find me!

The patient-centered healthcare session at #iec2025 is so well-attended I’m in the overflow room! Good sign

I like these illustrations that are up around the conference hall. They gave the brain a butt 😆 #iec2025

Lifetime Achievement Award to Guilio Avanzini, who reflects on 60 years of progress in basic and clinical epilepsy science.

He dedicates the award to his late wife, who was also a neurologist. ❤️

It’s happening very soon! ✈️

I’ll be in Lisbon at ILAE’s International Epilepsy Congress 2025 talking functional seizures (and, critically, discussing *how* we talk about functional seizures). 🧠

See you there, nerds!*

You cannot seriously look at places like NYC, DC, Boston, etc and say that crime is worse now. Or even as national averages

Friends, some upcoming special programming:

From Aug 30-Sep 3, I'll be at the International Epilepsy Congress in Lisbon - the largest international conference on epilepsy!

And with that, you'll be seeing some different stuff from me 👇

I’d say that trend is moving in the right direction, wouldn’t you?

Recovery continues. The neural principles work.
