Despite the serious official nature of the matter, the manner in which the conflict was prosecuted was light-hearted, demonstrated by the length of time taken to settle the dispute, if nothing else. This is so important. It may be a simplistic view but it all started with repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 under Reagan. The idea was that instead of major broadcasters having to represent differing views, it was acceptable to have different one-sides broadcasters. Big mistake.
