Lots of microscopy of all different things. If it’s not big enough, make it bigger #UExM

It was a pleasure having so many people interested in learning expansion - even if the images did not look amazing

Trip 3 and past the 100 species count! Thank you for hosting us in České Budějovice Julius and Galina (and everyone providing samples!), for the prime support, and a fantastic selection of cultures!

Two weeks at @ubcbotany.bsky.social are coming to an end, marking the 2nd trip for our @moorefound.bsky.social project @dudinlab.bsky.social @gautamdey.bsky.social & T. Richards.
Thanks for hosting @pjkeelinglab.bsky.social, @fburki.bsky.social and most importantly Denis Tikhonenkov & Vittorio!

First stop of our @moorefound.bsky.social endeavour - @bic-wur.bsky.social. Sjoerd is keeping me busy with a bunch of species and we are busy fixing and plunge freezing them for the best possible #UExM results

Central to the "vortex" is a cylinder of MT sheets. Lots of smallish nuclei around the structure. There is also one example of what I believe is a later stage of the same with more volume being taken up a more nuclei present. MT shown in grey

Anyone could help with an ID?
I've been seeing this vortex of cilia inside different dinoflagellate species at different sites along the European coast. It's several layers of cilia facing into a central cavity, emerging from regularly spaces basal bodies (arrows and centrin ). #ProtistsOnSky

Since everyone is using the big restart of SciSky(?) to post their favorite content, here is some Miamiensis preying on Uronema

There is plenty more highlighted by @hiralshah.bsky.social and @centriolelab.bsky.social Selected species overviews available shorturl.at/ps4mR as “planktoncards” ;) This will stay a preprint for a bit so please do send us comments, critique, and suggestions! 5/5

Samples collected in Tokyo provided us with a mix of amoeba and ciliates (my favourites) that did not disappoint! Dots, meshes, rings, and fibers! Lacrymaria and Vorticella have it all – for the short time they survived in the lab ;( 4/5

Without any pre-treatment over 70% of tested species expand and stain at least partially! And already pan labelling with NHS reveals a lot of details using conventional microscopy. What about immunostaining and environmental samples? 3/5

The fantastic RCC and BMCC provided us with more cultures we could hope for when we visited with EMBL TREC to assess how well U-ExM works across planktonic species. Well, it works quite well! 2/5

New preprint! #UExM for >200 microbial eukaryotes, all 1670 volumes available via FIJI/Mobie! Thank you to everyone that made it possible especially Armando and @hiralshah.bsky.social , @gautamdey.bsky.social @centriolelab.bsky.social, and @dudinlab.bsky.social! tinyurl.com/PlanExM1
