An indie game dev in Detroit destined to rule the world. This account is managed by Steven Zavala. Our most notable release (so far) is WaveCrash!!: http://wavecrashgame.com

I've begun my traditional replay of Monster Rancher Battle Card II for the PS1 that I feel compelled to do every few years. It's a deeply flawed game (I always forget how clumsy the cards' translations are) but still a comfort game for me. Anyone else have an obscure game they like to return to?

Also got a photo of their awesome mascot!

Now that I'm back at a convention after a long slumber, I have revived my tradition of posing too seriously with an adorable stuffed toy. #JAFAX2025

If you were wondering if #JAFAX2025 had sumo the answer is yes!

Want to earn one of these sick ribbons that proclaim your enthusiasm for independently developed games? Then get down to #JAFAX2025 this weekend and play some games!

Part 2/2:

I used my amateur graphic designs skills to put together a program for the #JAFAX2025 Indie Game Space! I had to really crank up the saturation to make it pop in print form but here it is in series-of-PNGs form! Part 1/2:

To go along with the recruitment poster design, here's my design for the #JAFAX ribbon game! Now I just have to determine the most eye bleedingly loud color combo for it. Right now I'm leaning toward metallic purple on hot green.

To help find more games for the JAFAX Indie Game Space, I put together a flier to post in local game stores using my 0 years of graphic design experience! Did I just find a rad punk ransom note style font that I'm going to overuse? Yup! If you want to sign up, click this: forms.gle/iG2VofpmHqPf...

#10: Fancy dinner date nights! One of the things my wife and I first bonded over was our love of food. Here's the mussels from our most recent date night to Le Suprême in Detroit.

#8: Blades in the Dark! A TTRPG about doing crimes in a city full of ghosts! It's my favorite game to run and I love how the rules encourage players to take chances and roll with the consequences. It makes for great drama without feeling like an adversarial thing between the players and GM.
January 27, 2025 at 4:47 AM
#6: Our adorable dog Bella! She's the first dog that I had a hand in adopting. She's a chihuahua mix that is approximately the size of two standard chihuahuas stacked on each other.
January 27, 2025 at 4:26 AM
#3: The Detroit Lions! I inherited my Detroit sports fandom from my dad when I was born. For most of my life, they've been a complete joke so these last few seasons where they've been real competitors have been a lot of fun.
January 26, 2025 at 11:55 PM
Now that I've listed my #1 love, everything else will be in no particular order! #2 is the 2008 film Chocolate, a Thai martial arts masterpiece about a developmentally disabled young woman who becomes a martial arts savant and beats people up to earn money for her mother's cancer treatment.

The polls have closed and the theme for Locally Sourced Anthology II is...Eras of Time! Turns out time really does conquer all, even bugs and sports. Here's how the ranked choice voting shook out.

Oh man! The collection of retro games I contributed to for
@aadl.org's bicentennial series is out! Bind and publish esoteric knowledge to educate the people (and make a profit) in Dr. Chase's Mean Steam Machine! #pixelart #indiegame

Hey, don't tell anyone I told you but I've got the inside scoop on the Game Awards and Game of the Year is going to Monster Rancher Battle Card Episode II for the original Playstation, as it has every year since 2000.

Progress update on Dr. Chase's Mean Steam Machine! Added a background and some little stars to indicate when a stack has reached the target score. Also felt a little too easy with only 3 colors so I went and added some green blocks.

To explain that WIP I posted the other day, the project is retro games based on the life of Dr. A.W. Chase. Here's the current title graphic that took me way to long to make since I foolishly tried to design the typography myself before giving up! It's Dr. Chase's Mean Steam Machine!

Hey y'all! I'm working on a retro game project for the Ann Arbor District Library that I just found out I could tell people about. It's made in Unity but I'm trying to abide by the graphical limitations of the Gameboy Color. Enjoy my novice pixel art!

Using clothing and accessories for gear in place of the JRPG standard of swords and armor made me feel connected to the setting in a way that those fantasy tropes don't. Shifting trends causing different brands to be more or less powerful in different areas actually made inventory management fun.

TWEWY used the dual screens of the DS perfectly. The way it used the two screens, one controlled via the touch screen and the other with the D-pad, to represent two different characters in a single tandem battle was immediately engaging to me.

I finally have an excuse to put together a talk about @jonbois.bsky.social's 17776! I hope I can make my disjointed thoughts into something that makes sense to the @michigantech.bsky.social Husky Game Dev group!

All set up and ready to go with my talk about the awful jobs I had at the start of my career and the lessons to be learned from them at @ltuexpo.bsky.social
