Worth mulling the conclusion (after sobbing in fear).
When the historian Robert Paxton was asked about Trump and fascism a few weeks ago, he made an important point. Of course, Trump is a fascist, Paxton concluded. It was fine to compare him to Mussolini and Hitler, but there was a larger point. It took some luck for those two to come to power. “The Trump phenomenon looks like it has a much more solid social base,” Paxton said, “which neither Hitler nor Mussolini would have had.” Fascism is a phenomenon, not a person. Just as Trump was always a presence, so is the movement he has created. It is not just a matter of the actual fascists in his movement, who are scarcely hiding, nor of his own friendly references to Hitler or his use of Hitlerian language (“vermin,” “enemy within”). He bears responsibility for what comes next, as do his allies and supporters. Yet some, and probably more, of the blame rests with our actions and analysis. Again and again, our major institutions, from the media to the judiciary, have amplified Trump’s presence; again and again, we have failed to name the consequences. Fascism can be defeated, but not when we are on its side.

Staring out at the trees as I try to untangle Transcendentalism, a topic I studiously avoided in grad school, but now have to explain for a study guide writing job. At least I'm still learning new things? And my office window looks damn good, especially when you crop out the crap on the seat.

Effie Purrine, a tiny black cat, reaches up and attempts to show her dumb human how to open the food canister. She would do it herself if she only had thumbs. She ignores the fact that there is food in the digger feeder she is leaning over. Digging for your food is for lesser cats. It is literally beneath her. Her wide eyes and squeaky mew are perfectly calibrated for maximum guilt, and she simply CANNOT believe it's not working. Mommy is THE WORST.

Cats HATE: Roofing Edition.
A small black cat looks up from under the table with giant "WTF" eyes, while a larger gray and white cat lounges sulkily on a heat vent. Even roofing noise is not enough to keep Bogie from his heat. A white and black/brown cat with a raccoon tail scowls while his saucer dish ears remain alert for noisy threats to is safety.

The furnace has been on all of 10 minutes and Bogie's already settled in on a vent.
A gray and white cat naps on an ornate cast iron floor vent. He looks vaguely sad, but he's probably just sleepy. At any rate, the heat is on and he's loving it.

Last week felt like Fall. This week we're icing the cats' water to keep them from overheating.
Weather forecast predicting days of 90 degree or hotter weather in Rochester, NY. We are currently under a heat advisory. The cats' water fountain is full of melting ice. Bogie, a gray and white cat with a stripey tail, sprawls in a dark corner because it's too hot to snuggle with his mommy. It is 1 in the morning. He is most displeased.

Welp. I guess this week is following an elemental theme? Got earth on Monday when we went to the Sonnenberg gardens, air when we just generally breathed (or at least I hope so), water yesterday at Niagara Falls.
Baby Sister stands beneath a weeping something tree (not a willow). It looks like a fun spooky cave. There is also dirt in the picture. Niagara Falls are a tourist spot for a reason. It's damn impressive how much water is rushing over that edge into the he river. There's almost more steam/spray than flowing water. We are all lucky nature hasn't wiped us out yet.

Morning Bean will not stay still to be admired.
A tiny black cat sits on a stair post, which makes an elegant pedestal from which to admire her adorability. Instead of showing off, however, she is trying to bat at her tail. She has almost fallen off larger stair posts doing this in the past.
