It's fairer to tax what people don't earn from land than what people do earn from work.

Even those who own lots of land could agree with that basic principle. In exchange, everyone's equity from work and productivity would grow.

Working should get more tax relief than gains from owning land. We have it backwards.

It's doesn't seem right that a highrise should pay more than a vacant lot next to it.

Just another adverse incentive in our property system that LVT addresses.

CBC The National on our team's work @ubiworks.bsky.social

We're already seeing increasing reports of companies firing, or not hiring, because of AI.

We all know what's coming. All paths to a bright future lead to UBI.

Basic income is just using existing money in the economy more efficiently.

Bernie dropped this video saying AI will wipe out the working class.

“Millions of jobs will be eliminated. This is not science fiction. It’s already happening.”

The UBI movement has been saying this for years.

People make better long-term decisions for themselves and those around when they know they have long-term security. That's what basic income can provide.

A land value tax can leave most households better off, experiencing net income and property tax relief.

It can begin to fix incentives in a housing market to chase land gains and bid up prices.

Another view that looks like going back to normal, but there is a reversal of correlation since 2022.

We can reasonably anticipate these trends will continue. What can we do?

The Great Decoupling: Productivity vs. Wages

The Great Decoupling of

- GDP vs. wages
- Labour productivity vs. wages
- and now job openings vs. market performance

All are accelerated by automation 🧵

It's far better to tax land and natural resources than your work income.

That's a vision that can lead us to a Star Trek instead of a Star Wars future, where progress benefits everyone, not just whoever bought everything up first.

Basic income is just using existing money in the economy more efficiently.

This might just be the biggest economic injustice of all.

Three policies that will put humanity on track for greatness: implementing them would solve most problems we face today. #UBI #basicincome #LVT

The prodigious economist Matt Rognlie analyzed Thomas Piketty's claim that capital is taking income from labour, and found that it's true *only if you count housing*.

In other words, the main driver of capital's growing income share is housing. Which is majority land value.

Many land tax advocates believe it should apply to all land, with some exemptions (agriculture, nonprofit) or none.

However, it could be designed to target luxury properties, the wealthiest owners, or a 'landlord's tax' on income-generating investments.

The whole wealth tax debate is missing a big point

Not all wealth is the same. Stocks, gold, or yachts don't affect your cost of living.

Land does—we all need it to live. No other wealth tax will restore affordability.

This debate needs an update 🧵

You've heard of universal basic income. What about universal basic capital?

Billionaire Nicolas Berggruen says it's how we tackle inequality and give citizens a stake in a nation's success.

"As opposed to taxing the robots, why not own the robots?"
August 29, 2025 at 5:01 PM
It's very simple

The bottom tends to make money working, the top from owning things

AI will only widen the gap, it's the natural trajectory of our economy

It's why universal basic income and universal basic capital are getting serious interest
August 29, 2025 at 5:01 PM
This gap will widen with AI
August 26, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Even with a basic income, working class people will *always* be trying to outrun the cost of living — no matter how productive we get.

That's why we'll never solve poverty unless we tax and broadly share the rent of land.
