Temporal integration is when we perceive multiple successive stimuli as if they were a single event. It happens all the time, such as when you see the ~25 frames/sec on TV as fluid motion. And you are more likely to remember the event of making tea, rather than the series of motor acts involved. 2/3

We put forward the hypothesis of how dimensionality reduction and expansion enable the brain to encode, store and retrieve a vast amount of episodic memory information. Reduction compresses sensory input into simplified, storable codes, while expansion reconstructs vivid details.

Drawing on recent insights from cognitive psychology, systems neuroscience, and neuroanatomy, we propose two accounts of how dimensionality transformation occurs in the brain: structurally (via corticohippocampal pathways) and functionally (through neural oscillations).
