Excerpt from the book: ROENTGENIZDAT: AN INTRODUCTION A few years ago, while wandering in a market in St Petersburg, I came across a strange disc, somewhat like a scruffy vinyl record. My Russian companions were as baffled by it as I was and the old guy who ran the stall was much more interested in selling me some touristy swag. But I bought it anyway and brought it back to London. When I tried to play it, I discovered it was single-sided, recorded at 78rpm, and contained the 1954 song Rock Around the Clock' by Bill Haley and the Comets. But the most remarkable thing was that, when held up to the light, it revealed the image of two skeletal hands. It was a record made on an x-ray. I knew immediately that I had to find out more: who made it, why they made it, and how they made it. Seeking the answers to those questions became a quest, a journey of discovery into a lost world, in which cold war politics, cultural censorship, bootleg technology and repurposing all coalesced around the irrepressible human love of music. From about 1946-64, years when culture in the Soviet Union was subject to a censor and when the recording industry was ruthlessly controlled by the state, an underground community of bootleggers defied the authorities by illicitly copying, making and selling records of forbidden songs. Some of them were music lovers, some were entrepreneurial black-marketeers; most were a mixture of the two. They often ran serious risks to feed the appetite of a public hungry for music they actually loved rather than the music they were supposed to love. Book cover „Bone Music“ by Stephen Coates.
