📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.
We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

Does your organization rely on MDN for reference docs?
Do you often check browser compat on MDN or caniuse.com?
Do you use tools like browser DevTools or VSCode in your work?

If so, you rely directly on the work that Open Web Docs does and should consider sponsoring.

To convince your boss.

I wondered if "AI" systems are "tools" and realized that structurally they are not. They are makeshifts.

Are "AI" system really tools?
I was on a panel on “AI” yesterday (was in German so I don’t link it i this post, specifics don’t matter too much) and a phrase came up that stuck with me on my way home (riding a bike is just the best thing for thinking). That phrase was AI systems are just tools […]

The response to the predicted crash of the AI sector often is that "every crash leaves something useful behind" and that this time it will be models. I don't think that is the case.

AI models age like milk and the infrastructures left behind won't be ones that are helpful for democratic societies.
These are not the same
After sharing Ed Zitron’s latest piece called “OpenAI Is A Systemic Risk To The Tech Industry” I got a few responses arguing in a similar way: People agree that “AI” and especially “generative AI” is a massive bubble that does not really make much sense – if you imply rational decision making. Training the models, […]
