Our work just got an issue # today! We've been working on an acaricide treatment to control for winter ticks and in #moose, so that we could understand #tick infestations vs other stress factors on calf survival and moose #ecology / pop. dynamics more broadly. 🧪🐜🦌Read more: doi.org/10.1002/wsb....

When I found out polar bears had been spotted not far from where I live, I couldn’t help but dig deeper. 🐻‍❄️

Who are these wandering bears? Why do they leave the Arctic? My research uncovers fascinating answers and important challenges. 🤔

Where are all the field studies?

This ⬇️ important but rather depressing paper describes how conducting, & crucially initiating, field studies is becoming harder & rarer.

A short 🧵 (and a call for more fieldwork)

Extinction of experience among ecologists
Fieldwork-based research and education in ecology are under multiple threats and are progressively declining. We call for greater attention to this ongoing loss of direct field experience within the ecology community, as it could have widespread consequences for science and education, ultimately hindering efforts to address the ongoing biodiversity crisis.

I remember talking this in my BSc and afterwards in lab meetings + journal clubs. It sparked interesting (heated) discussions. Some grad students gained their 1st fieldwork experience by volunteering... I'm glad that I rarely witness volunteering nowadays, although it still happens :/

Can AI detection tools intended to uphold academic integrity do more harm than good? This paper aims to show how false positives unfairly target non-native English speakers and unique writing styles (e.g., researchers with autism), sparking anxiety and distrust.
