I read this back in college, but then forgot the title and didn't know where I'd even put it. Read a few stories at the park earlier. This is the kind of thing I like. Just down to earth, brief, poetic prose. Good stories.

I was happy with this. Kid in the '50s sees his parents killed by an inexplicable creature. Grows up to be a journalist hunting it to find out what it was. It's good.

What came in the night was the endless suggestion of things, the brain bleeding dreams into reality. Spectres lingering on the bleeding edges of reality. Perhaps he did sleep. Perhaps the noise that eventually did arise in the hallway was nothing more than a figment of his wrecked brain. That shuffling. This sound like something heavy and broken. Rotting spectre dragging itself across the floor with a choked hissing sound for breathing, a crumpled thing struggling to stay alive. In his mind he pictured it laboriously coming forth, bilious in its utter decay. A ghoul from a pit. The door ever closer. Was that a shadow under the crack between the floor and the door? He thought it could feasibly be Buford. Some unholy reunion. Graham chuckled softly to himself in the bed and thought it would be fitting. Outside the door there was the dry sandpaper-rasp of breathing. Foul smell seeped under like a carpet unfurling, blistered bumped boiled tongues whispering Satanic incantations and pleading to be let in, the words vapor on Graham’s ears but no one came in, no one did, and soon the thing was gone and he knew it as sure as he knew anything. On rigid trembling limbs, on the cold that caressed all of him like some awful incorruptible lover, Graham got up to check the door. Opening it gingerly, trembling cold, the hallway lay as empty as the day the place had been finished. There was nothing. But in his mind he could still feel its presence. As true as though he’d seen it. That presence intractable.

"He was at least seven feet tall, it seemed to Aidan's child mind. He wore all black and his skin was as pale and milky as a corpse's. What was most striking were his eyes; a complete and total whiteness, an absence of color, and yet there was somehow inexplicably feeling in them. It was an odd vengeful thing, something prideful and vain, without any humility. He looked then like a satisfied man, well-off, done with a sizeable meal. He looked down at Aidan and grinned huge block-like tombstone-shaped teeth. Then he was kneeling down. He put a hand on Aidan's shoulder and his fingers were ice-cold. "I'm leaving now," he said, in a voice that was like an icy branch scraping on a window in January. "I've filled myself. And I can see in you that you won't disappoint me in the future. This will be fun."
