After a four-year investigation, a breakthrough study reveals the cause of sea star wasting disease (SSWD). A strain of the bacterium Vibrio pectenicida is the culprit behind the marine epidemic that has killed billions of sea stars since 2013. Read the study: 🔗https://tinyurl.com/4rcb3xpf

#ClimateChange and #CycloneAlfred. It’s not quite as simple as “hotter climate = more cyclones” but that doesn’t mean #globalheating didn’t affect weather systems like TC Alfred. So, what does the science say, and what will this mean for cyclones in the future? @matildaboseley.bsky.social explains

NOAA Fisheries published a 'final rule' on December 17, 2024 to change the status of the magnificent Caribbean pillar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus) - from "threatened" to "endangered".

The rule was halted by President Trump's January 20th memorandum, entitled “Regulatory Freeze Pending Review.”

#Townsville is in the middle of a severe weather event - the last time we had such bad weather, I had to tell a collaborator that I couldn't send out samples in time as the roads were submerged and airport closed. It felt like a dog-ate-my-homework moment that I attached a newslink as 'proof' 😅
