What I've usually seen is that the decrease is compensated for by a yarn over or other type of increase elsewhere. I think this makes the most sense, the other option is cabling but that won't give you the depth or structure you're looking for, I think.

If it were easy to find out if the designer knits English or Continental that would be a cool folliw-up analysis to do!

I have found it really interesting that there is much more variability in the row gauge than the stitch gauge across datasets I've generated, I've been curious what drives that variability!
