a melancholy emblem of parish cruelty
i find the dates here (1490-1520) fascinating. not because of the lag, but because of how fast it is. to take a (not particularly satisfactory) modern analogue, the BBC launched iPlayer in 2007, and even now studios and distributors are trying to unpick and rationalise their supply chain.

a question that pops into my head quite frequently: what is the editorial and operational model of the BBC News website?
jesus christ, is this the style standard at the BBC now? That's fucking vile, and the entire organization should be ashamed down to its bones.
It looks like that BBC page has been updated in the last few minutes, so that's no longer the last sentence. I think part of it has been moved to this paragraph in the middle of the article, and the age is no longer mentioned:

Doing this challenge made me firm up what I like about the 2020s and realise more than ever that people who think current music has stagnated are just weird. Surges of creativity across Africa, Asia and South America; a golden generation of women pop stars; tons of funny, filthy rap - good times!

1. CHAPPELL ROAN - “Good Luck, Babe!” (24, USA) - 12 POINTS

How do you do fellow normies? First time I heard this I thought “that chorus is like Dragostea Din Tei (derogatory)” but NOW I think “that chorus is like Dragostea Din Tei (complimentary)”

fantastic quote in this: “There’s clearly something political about it but nobody knows what it is,”
It’s the exclusive everyone wanted, the story that will win next year’s Pulitzer…

I can reveal London’s giant AI generated Christmas artwork, the subject of much online mockery, is being torn down - and I honestly *genuinely* think you’ll never guess why. www.londoncentric.media/p/ai-artwork...
London's giant AI artwork to be torn down
The bizarre story of why a much-talked-about creation is being torn down. Plus: Docklands Light Railway extension, giant laser stalks the night sky, and more tales of Android phone theft rejection.

there’s a place just opened near me that does excellent martinis, fernet and pastis, and v good food, which allows you to snack rather than ordering a full meal, bistro style, and it’s all priced waaaay too low…

credit to @londoncentric.media for recording what must be *the* default response of our time, but so rarely actually captured.

why do I emphasize the Manchester-ness of this? because Blue Labour 'thinkers' try to portray themselves as authentic representatives of a neglected Northern working class. But while there's plenty of racism in the North, as anywhere else, there's also a long history of integration and anti-racism.

i mean without looking at the lyrics there is no actual way to know that it’s “abandoned bare on the heart’s mountains” rather than “abandoned bear on the heart’s mountains” in the jamie woon song. net loss imo. 🐻😢

i think the thing that concerns me most in this four body problem is the emergence of a “c’est Nicolas qui paie” movement, social media driven, born out of lack of growth with a “producitvity” underpinning, attracting youth vote, fundamentally racist,
Completely agree. Absolutely the biggest known unknown is that for decades British politics has been a three body problem and we just don't know what 'it is now a four body one' *means*.

I like the Carry On films but the lore is too confusing, impossible for modern audiences to accept these people could play a major part in the French Revolution AND lose their bras on camping holidays

hafta say, without really expecting to, i *really* enjoyed die zauberflöte at the royal opera house last night. this despite the fact the final scene was somewhat ruined by a bulb going so instead of a gigantic golden sun, it looked like a giant trebor mint was being rolled on stage.

use of the word “structure” here giving me the chills, suspect this is a version of early uncertainty about the provenance of the Tors on Dartmoor. nevertheless.

not DW/ST related so a QT: one of things this post has made me realise is that i don’t have a good picture for how the (apparently) v successful BBC Studios must have a v good sense of the dysfunctional US media landscape, yet ended up with the the DW/Disney situation.
*extremely FT voice* Indeed. The BBC's challenge of 'how are we selling Doctor Who overseas' is a metaphor for being a midsized open economy, in that 'Paramount is not well-run' is a big additional challenge for 'what international streaming service do you pitch Doctor Who at?'
If you're trying to sell DW internationally you should be slotting it next to Trek as a niche Sci Fi show but Paramount gambled on it being a competitor to Disney SW which, haha, what the hell were they thinking???

one of the reasons @londoncentric.media is great is it really enriches your view of the fabric of the city - how it works, how it doesn’t, the gaps, which people either fill or exploit, the corners and curios. this story feels almost dickensian in its mixture of the quaint and the crooked.

ducked into Empson’s Argufying yesterday evening for some stimulation, which in turn, via a favourable TLS review, sent me to CS Lewis’ Studies in Words, which i think is one of *the* books I would give any smart sixth form student. It’s really a primer in the highest levels of literacy.

here’s a good one - a CEO who i uh… know.. in response to a comment that [employee] couldn’t come in because of covid, said “easy way round that: don’t test!”. which, ludicrous as it is, somehow sums up a central post covid paradox - it haunts us by making people refuse its existence.
Same - I thought people would forget *why*, but the “someone who could work from home has brought their germs in with them. this is considered good” coming back, I did not predict.

this penguin english library copy of kim that i picked up today is really appalling quality. the imprint is fine, but the paper quality and cover is horrible and worse than the old £1 penguin copy i lost. these are the rigs of the times i guess.

For reasons too complex to explain here, I wrote an Apple II program designed for Early Modern Age Catholics to determine if they're allowed to have sex with their wife, or if it'd be a sin.

Here's the video of it running.
