the fact that mamdani's speech also specifically calls out the hypocrisy of a "universalism" that makes blatant exceptions for palestinian life kind drives this whole bit in lmao. but people worm around that too cuz they don't see that cruelty as 'active' as much as 'unfortunately inevitable'.

i think part of what causes this is many don't imagine the cruelty they enact as *active*, but more some unfortunate reality they simply cannot do anything about/must engage in. you see people pull sometime 'we're not throwing you under the bus'. they see it more as 'leaving you in the woods'

the cruelty they're imagining as being covered up is the laughing supervillain sort that's hidden by honeyed words instead of the more casual cruelty of this exact decorum and civility that's 'yeah sorry you just don't matter as much as other people and you're fucked forever'.
