These comments don't come from people thinking those games are too much. They come from the isolation of being a kid or teen who enjoyed videogames and maybe got teased or even bullied for it being childish or stupid. You wanted to show everyone they were wrong.

"this game I played as a kid traumatized me so much" and it's just that as a kid a good storytelling and maybe a sad scene impacted you and stuck with you forever.

It's so funny that people keep being like omg all indie games are about mental illness or death and/or grief. Many videogames have always been about that, I feel like there was a ton of old games catered to young teens that dealt with death and grief and mature themes in general.
