We live on an acre of rewilded land in the west of Ireland. I love nature the sea & boats. I detest all destruction of nature & animal cruelty.
There was a little bat zipping about this evening. It's so great to know that they live in our trees 💚🦇💙

It's my birthday today and my lovely husband made me a beautiful collage birthday card, all cut out from old wrapping paper and empty tissue boxes.
Aw 😊❤️

It was like summer today...in October 😕 but it's all fine, nothing to worry about...

This Grace O'Malley (pirate queen) castle near us has been lime washed & looks as it would in her day.
Her bedroom was at the top. Apparently she had a rope tied to her bed post & out the window down to a galley (ship) below. To be tugged in emergencies only!

My son filmed this pine martin outside his office (my ex garden shed) very exciting! We wondered where all the rats had gone!

I won't win an award for my filming
But in a world gone mad, here's a few moments of peace from the wood my mum planted nearly 35 years ago (I know self seeded is better)
Filmed last Sunday)

Take the time to stop and look at blackberry leaves. At this time of year they are like little works of art 😍

Do you ever think that some places just ooze with magic 🧚✨

I've been collecting birds foot trefoil seed pods and you certainly can see how they got their name.

We have butterflies and Devil's bit scabious along each side of our driveway 😍

Every evening the rooks swirl and swoop about, before landing on this roof at Westport Quay. Then they all fly off again and more swooping until they finally settle in the trees.
The nightly ritual seems such a waste of precious energy.
They make a fantastic sound though 😍

Clew Bay looking clear and lovely but Croagh Patrick has his head in the clouds (a bit like me 😊) 💙

A magical hedgerow in West Mayo. Harebells, tormentil and blackberries 😍

Please don't start cutting yet, small insects like this leaf shieldbug and leaf shieldbug larvae below still need somewhere to hide and feed.

These truly painful attempts at planting a woodland are infuriating too.
August 5, 2025 at 6:35 AM
Only one bent over, the rest are standing tall 😊
August 4, 2025 at 9:07 AM
And a fantastic plant too Claire. Ours have grown about 6ft tall. Although I'm just going to check to see if Storm Floris has flattened them!

@waspwoman.bsky.social Hi Seirian, I wonder if you could please identify this wasp seen on our wild angelica? She's really big. I know it's a she because I saw her mating with that smaller Mr.
I hope they aren't Asian wasps? I don't think they are. Many thanks @cathhodsman.bsky.social

Hi Cath, would you happen to know if is this a hornet? I thought it was, but having seen your hornets I'm not so sure. It's surely not a queen wasp, but it certainly is huge 😊
August 3, 2025 at 9:02 AM
I spotted one yesterday Cath, totally tattered yet flying about as if nothing was wrong.
July 30, 2025 at 7:31 AM
What would be so very wrong with every verge looking like this? It's not causing accidents or obstructing the view or whatever reasons are given for cutting.
It's full of colour and life and looks a million times better than sprayed&brown or cut&lifeless.
July 27, 2025 at 4:12 PM
Cath, would have any idea what this wasp is?
Plus, as you can see, I have acquired about 14 stripies and so far they seem pretty content, although some of them wander off to where there's no ragwort and I keep putting them back!
I just hope there's a few moths nxt yr 🤞
July 22, 2025 at 10:19 AM
Why do we need poisonous sprays to wipe out ragwort & kill the insects that control it?
Meaning more spray is needed when the ragwort grows back because we've wiped out the insects?
Oh yes, silly me.
Nature is free. Sprays make money.
July 16, 2025 at 11:23 AM
Yesterday I visited an area where last year there was lots of ragwort and stripies. But dismayed to see that almost all the ragwort had gone and hardly any stripies 😔
So I brought a few home with me @CathHodsman

I snapped a photo of a clover on our plot recently and it reminded me how beautiful and overlooked clover is, as well as being such an all round important plant☘️🐝
