Thread worth your time. The reason that GOP Congress is ceding control of the purse to Musk is that he's doing what they've always wanted to do, but could never muster the votes.
One way to think about the DOGE effort is it's an outgrowth of 20 years of hardliner conservatives frustrated by their inability to get the votes in Congress to do what they want to do. 1/

Businesses and institutions know how to survive dealing with corrupt authoritarians. It's awful, messy, immoral and inefficient, but a well worn road.

True since the '90's, starting with Clinton. Everyone in DC knew Gingrich was fucking around, but he played the media game better.
A key asymmetry of this era of American politics and how it’s covered is that Trump is expected to do bad and corrupt things, so when he does it barely qualifies as news. But Dems are expected to be beyond reproach, so anything that seems even slightly suspect is a huge scandal.
