Great piece RIP to both. Used to get it back in the days before the bypass at home when we used to call it "The Express" in the days before Dublin Bus had such a thing. They'll miss him very much. Its a dangerous job & not particularly well paid either. They will both leave big boots to fill.

And yeah, this is the awkward bit nobody wants to say out loud. There's an implicit belief in Ireland in that the worst case scenario SOMEBODY would come to save us (which i think is incorrect), but more importantly how willing are we to extend that to others

Given the current climate I wouldn't be 100% certain about that. The risk is very small but Ireland still remains hopelessly exposed.
But the hybrid war scenario is still very real and harder to tackle, and that's faced by every democratic country
