🍿 SHUDDER Film 23 of 31: Scare Me 🍕

Spooky season continues! (Who are we kidding, it never ends 🎃)

From write/director/actor Josh Ruben, we have the ridiculous horror+comedy, Scare Me. I had a huge smile on my face for this entire film. It's an absolute blast to watch (and probably to film). Boo!

That’s a horror movie we’d watch over and over again #mamdani #yeson50

🍿 SHUDDER Film 22 of 31: In A Violent Nature 🧑‍🚒

Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace to watch this. I appreciate the fresh take on slasher tropes/villains, but as someone on Reddit described it, this feels more like horror ASMR. I genuinely would probably love it as a screensaver.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 21 of 31: Dark Match 🤼

Future final girl alert ‼️ This wrestling-themed horror film is a lot of fun, and so is its lead, Miss Behave. You don't need to like wrestling to appreciate it, but you'll notice a few easter eggs if you do.

Never break kayfabe.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 20 of 31: What Josiah Saw 👁️

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this one. It's skillfully made and well-acted, it just doesn't feel like a Shudder movie. There's a bit of a gritty Coen brothers vibe. Somewhat similar thematically to The Dark and The Wicked.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 19 of 31: The Mortuary Collection ⚰️

This anthology film is cheesy as hell. The effects are cheap, the acting is hammy, and some of the segments are predictable. That said, I found it incredibly charming-like a series of modernized Goosebumps episodes. Clancy Brown kills it as always.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 18 of 31: Glorious 🚽

On a much lighter note, there's Glorious - about a distressed man meeting a demigod in a bathroom stall. That demigod? JK Simmons, though you wouldn't know it if not for that voice. I really enjoyed this one! But as always, I like one-location films.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 17 of 31: The Sadness 🩸

This movie is not for the faint of heart, scream things. Imagine the infected from 28 Days Later crossed with the gleefully sadistic humans from The Purge series. The brutality is extraordinary and difficult to stomach. Impressive practical effects, though.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 15 of 31: Clown in a Cornfield 🤡🌽

As they say in the UK, "It does what it says on the tin."

It's a clown. In a cornfield. If that appeals to you, you're going to get exactly what you expect, and you'll probably have fun doing so. It won't blow anyone away, but it has a fun vibe.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 14 of 31: Grafted 🫥

This is a solid horror film from New Zealand. Super grotesque body horror and a lead who is giving her all. And that intro! Might not get some of these images out of my head.

This is also the first time I've looked up a Sound Designer. Bruce Langley - kudos.

Last year A24 posted these marketing images for Heretic at the SLC airport ahead of the busy LDS General Conference. With all the discussion in the movie about blindly believing marketing, it seems appropriate?

🍿 SHUDDER Film 13 of 31: Birth/Rebirth 🐖

AKA Anything for Lila. (jk)

This one was easily my least favorite out of all of them so far. It's not a bad movie, it's just unpleasant in... not a fun spooky way.

Always good to see Judy Reyes though.

SHUDDER Film 12 of 31: Anything For Jackson 🧒

You know what, it's not a unique premise, but it's really well-done and super creepy. A few moments genuinely shocked me, and others were genuinely heartfelt.

Casting Death (Julian Richings) from Supernatural as the grandfather was a brilliant choice.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 11 of 31: You'll Never Find Me 📻

Yet another entry for one of my fav genres, "people having tense conversations in a single location during a storm" - absolutely loved it.

More along these lines: Heretic, Barbarian (somewhat), The Apology... Please recommend others!

🍿 SHUDDER Film 10 of 31: V/H/S/Halloween 🍬

Not the best V/H/S, but not terrible.

My two favorite segments were "Home Haunt" (the real standout) and "Fun Size" (charming in its silliness and horrendous acting). The "Diet Phantasma" frame narrative started out promising but didn't go anywhere.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 9 of 31: The Boy Behind the Door 🪓

Intense and really grim. In some ways, this was the film I wanted Skinamarink to be - 2 kids trapped in a house trying to survive a force of evil. The first half is more effective than the second half, but the child leads are incredible.

🍿 SHUDDER Film 8 of 31: Influencer 🏝️

Yep, more influencer violence. The subgenre is getting a little tired, but I like how this one keeps you recalibrating. Potential final girl energy.

Speaking of which, I'm going to skip one of the next films for... reasons. That means 9 down and 22 to go. 😅 🎬

🍿 SHUDDER Film 7 of 31: Sissy 💅

I enjoyed this. Felt like it was striking the same tone that Slaxx attempted of candy-colored influencer violence, but with a bit more skill. Many of the characters are still insufferable, but Aisha Dee is great in the titular role.
