I think the saying probably meant "friend" in the same cynical way that you might say something like "the storm will be our friend here"; a storm can't be your actual friend, it has no sentience but if you know how to sail through it better than your opponent, the storm will help you as if it was.

I dislike mine because the combination of it being a common name and me not being popular growing up meant I'd learn to assume it wasn't me being called.
Then I seem rude for ignoring on the rare occasion someone does mean me.
