-If old games didn't have binaural/spatial/3D audio, should I set them to 7.1 and then expect Sonic to extract and reproduce directional information on 2.1?

Microsoft could do a much better job at explaining what Sonic actually does and what games support it.

I think Battlefield 6 might be the first game in the history to have a user friendly Audio settings menu!
It explains what each mode does exactly, whether it's currently supported and what it'd fall back to.

As a non expert, I've always been confused by audio menus.

2/4 Jump to 2025: AI is still spreading & justifying these practices, due the code bases it's trained on.
I just got this response from it

Calculating luminance from gamma space as BT.601 is not a good approx of doing it in linear BT.709. Math proves it. FXAA had this error too!

I've release a Luma HDR mod for Heavy Rain, a game that was very influential on me growing up!

2/3 How do I know they were wrong?
3 ways to tell
-Color graph goes out of range
-Luminance goes below 0 after decode (also due to full/limited range mismatch)
-Bink info tools
-Game is made after ~2004,BT601 wasn't a thing anymore
-Looking with my eyes

Red and green in particular appear different!

While reverse engineering loads of games, you start to see patterns. A big mistakes many devs made in the last 20yrs is decoding Bink videos as BT601 instead of BT709
Likely due to Bink docs not being updated from early 2000s

Mafia III has ~40m of videos, which one looks right to you?

I released an HDR mod for Thumper!
Game made magnificent usage of color.

Game is a perfect showcase of HDR (SDR on the left in the comparisons).
Download it here tinyurl.com/mb6uxr34, turn off the lights and try on an OLED TV, you won't be disappointed.

Original vs IGN version
I don't know what kind of color space mismatch or xyY chroma loss could have happened, but I'm sure it's possible to avoid this.

It's kinda funny that almost everybody in game dev thinks that HDR is a mess and non standardized, while this proves the sad reality: SDR is even less standardized and easier to mess up than HDR.

More pics here.

Reds and greens are shifted by a good 5% (0-255)
The monster above goes from emitting a threatening red to a more friendly orange. Not to mention the added banding

I'm no editing expert, but why is the biggest game news outlet in the world unable to re-encode without a quality and color loss?

I couldnt help but notice almost all IGN uploads trailers have shifted colors against the original version (xbx/ps/devs yt page)

To add a logo, not only they butcher the quality of anything in movement , but also mess up all colors, failing to show the game as originally intended by its artists

Just so it happens that I released a Remastered mod for Deus Ex Human Revolution the day the DX remaster was announced
I added HDR rendering+output, improved SDR, fixed 4k and Ultrawide support, + fixed graphics issues

The state of HDR in the game industry right now is catastrophic.
Silent Hill F, AAA game, shipped w/out color grading in HDR, on top of the raised blacks that come with all UE HDR games

It doesn't look as it's supposed to in HDR, atmospehre is completely gone, devs either didn't know or care for it

It was tricky to tweak the tonemapper to retain the same dreadful look, while leaving room for HDR brightness+colors, but I think I managed to strike the right balance
I had to modify over 150 shaders to get rendering working in HDR (the game was extremely optimized!)

New HDR+Ultrawide mod: INSIDE
an absolute gem
Reverse engineering shaders was very interesting as they did everything in a unique way, bespoke for a side scrolling horizontal view.
As usual, a large amount of data being lost due to the presentation being restricted to SDR.

I don't really like to offer customizations that stray much from the artistic intent, especially in case where it influences gameplay, but a lot of players were asking for customizations on the character light, so I've added an intensity, radius and falloff parameters.
Ready for download!

This is how bad banding was without my HDR mod
For some reason the hero light sprite is extremely low quality and quite distracting in dark areas (most of the game😁)

Plus, the whole rendering was 8bit, so if you stack multiple post process effects, quantization hits pretty fast!
September 7, 2025 at 3:37 PM
For clarify, this is not a post process effect after the game like ReShade.
It's part of my Luma project where a dozen+ Unity games are supported and much more.
To make it simple, each mod re-writes the game tonemapping/grading shaders to support HDR.
September 5, 2025 at 5:04 AM
I released a mod that adds HDR to Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Given the small team, the game doesn't support HDR and suffers from bad banding

I've also improved the SDR tonemapping (there wasn't any, it was a raw rgb clip), and fixed banding
