Historian of 20th Century Portugal. Alison’s husband. Worryingly concerned about the state of my garden. Arsenal supporter. I want a European Union that works for its peoples and their neighbours. Alfacinha, ex-aluno do Filipa de Lencastre.
Shocking news from Brown, a friendly and welcoming place where I spent a very happy year.

(5) The US should also cultivate “resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations”, that is, lend its weight to far-right anti EU parties. This, of course, puts the US in the same camp as Russia.

(4) Because of the “activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political liberty and sovereignty” the American “broad policy” towards Europe should prioritise “enabling Europe to stand on its own feet as a group of aligned sovereign nations” - i.e. without the EU.

(3) the aim of the United States should be to re-establish “conditions of stability with in Europe and strategic stability with Rússia”. Not one word on Russian interference in the affairs of other countries, and not one word of condemnation for the invasion of Ukraine.

(2) Russia appears only in the “Promoting European Greatness” section, as an entity misunderstood by what the document considers self-confidence-lacking politicians who are running Europe into the ground, refusing to listen to their peoples’ calls for peace.

(1) Everyone should read the National Security Strategy of the United States of America, November 2025. Quite something! One of its most revealing aspects is the lack of a section on Russia.

Scholars and art lovers from across Ireland, Europe, and the U.S. gathered in Belfast last month for a conference honoring the late S.B. Kennedy — a longtime curator at the @ulstermuseum.org and an art historian who authored the seminal work “Irish Art and Modernism, 1880-1950.” 🧵 (1/2)

Brilliant viva voce examination by Thomas McGrath - no corrections! - who becomes our Department’s latest Doctor. It was an enormous pleasure to co-supervise him with Jonathan Wright. And thanks to the examiners, Colin Barr and Roisin Higgins!

Trump’s hostile attitude towards Canada - neighbour, ally, Commonwealth member - demands as strong a rebuke from the international community as his stance on Ukraine (clearly nobody in Washington DC has the guts to do so)…

USA now actively aiding Russian invasion of Ukraine, forcing the latter to the negotiating table against its will and at a serious disadvantage. Sickening.

Why was Vance even allowed to speak, forcing his way into a conversation between heads of state? Was it an ambush, as some commentators say, or was he in a solo run, deliberately causing trouble?

Shocked and heartbroken by the scenes from the White House. This is how Hitler treated the leaders of Germany’s small neighbours.
