At the Battle of Antietam, 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after 12hrs of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle ended the Army of Northern Virginia's invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

May 7, 1863 front page of the Daily Patriot and Union (Harrisburg, Pa) sharing the "Soldier's Song".

Teachers: Share this primary source with students and have them explain the lyrics and then have them try to perform it.

Great "bell ringer' image to show kids, especially today. Students can use SCIM-C or KWL chart to start conversations about what is going on in the image. Great way to integrate primary sources in to the classroom. #edusky

On November 18, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln traveled through Hanover Junction to the dedication ceremonies for the Gettysburg National Cemetery. A series of photographs taken around this time are believed to have captured Lincoln standing on the station's platform.

The Daughters of Charity cleaned wounds and soothed dying soldiers. Those who worked at St. Francis Xavier became popular with the wounded. In recognition of their work, the Parish installed a plaque on the front of the church and a stained-glass window depicting the Sisters at work.

"The bursting shell scattered death wherever its fragments flew, and the shrill shot overhead or bounding madly across the field would both alike dip through a line of prostrate men and tear away with a wail to the rear, leaving a wide track of blood behind"

Shells "by thousands came bounding, skipping, racing and chasing each other over the hill, hissing, scoffing, spitting and moaning like relentless demons as they dashed through the detachments and went onward to crash among the reserves far back in the rear."

"No sound of roaring water, nor wind, nor thunder, nor of these combined, ever equaled the tremendous uproar, and no command, no order, no sound of voice could be heard at all above the ceaseless din of thousands of shrieking shot and shell falling thick and fast"

At 1pm on July 3, 1863 the stillness in Gettysburg was suddenly broken and the "men startled by the discharge of a couple of signal guns fired in quick succession" and then, "while the echo was yet rolling along the distant hills an uproar began as wonderful as had been the previous silence"

These Confederate soldiers who were killed on July 2, 1863 in the Rose farm in Gettysburg, would lie in the open fields for days before being buried.
