I have a 4 year old and we’ve been talking about government in terms of “grown up rules”. Police enforce the grownup rules. Police are mean to bad guys and they have to be! Police are mean to people they think are bad, but they’re wrong sometimes

Does this do a better job of explaining Japan than the reserve currency explanation too? I don’t know the details well, but I think they’ve been able to issue a lot of debt, and maybe that was possible because of low rates and domestic ownership of the debt too?

Sounds very susceptible to fraud from a bunch of dads overestimating how much they take care of their children. On the other hand, making that legally prosecutable fraud in some way could have positive social impacts!

I don’t think you need to assume an ideal allocation. You just need to be able to say that the discounted cash flows of some big project can’t possibly be positive at some acceptable interest rate.
That still requires some major assumptions about the expenses and anticipated revenues!

It reminds me of things I don’t like about Jordan Peterson. There’s a weird mix of “be an individual”, “be accountable to yourself”, but also paired with a LOT more “I’m so persecuted by society and I want it to stop WAH” than is appropriate for the individualistic ideas

And this isn’t an attempt to speak positively about the ideology. I’m just trying to say that they’re intentionally presenting themselves as burdened figures who should free themselves.

Isn’t the point of using Atlas there to highlight the curse, and that a “high agency Atlas” wouldn’t bear that burden for others?
