Spielberg could only make Munich because he’d made Hook; he’d seen his pet themes, star power, and studio power fail him utterly, and was freed to pursue the novel & the difficult. Cameron is too old to learn anything from the Hook he needs.

Throwing on Titanic idly; saw clips at the ‘97 oscars but only caught in full with the 2012 rerelease. Couple minutes in, Paxton’s assistant chides his boss, telling him he’s “full of shit” for the inane, purple pablum Paxton’s lazily rolling off as they drift past the wreck. It occurs to me that

top 3 QT are PF, Basterds, and Kill Bill; Pulp says on top because it’s the closest to something like indie roots for this sad, stunted man, and LA is more compelling a canvas than the broad signifiers elsewhere

Unfortunately, whatever its humble charms, we have to acknowledge Star Trek (2009), even more than Iron Man the previous year, as the most influential blockbuster of the century and the most responsible for the decline in emotional stakes, complexity, daring. It made everything TV.
