re: Perfidia Beverley Hills. Is she a Jezebel? A traitor? She’s an operator, a tragic figure, the first victim of Lockjaw’s heinous, predatory instinct. Her adaptation to survive gets her pregnant; she’s trapped and confused, human. She’s cool and inspiring, like her daughter.

Spielberg could only make Munich because he’d made Hook; he’d seen his pet themes, star power, and studio power fail him utterly, and was freed to pursue the novel & the difficult. Cameron is too old to learn anything from the Hook he needs.

top 3 QT are PF, Basterds, and Kill Bill; Pulp says on top because it’s the closest to something like indie roots for this sad, stunted man, and LA is more compelling a canvas than the broad signifiers elsewhere

Unfortunately, whatever its humble charms, we have to acknowledge Star Trek (2009), even more than Iron Man the previous year, as the most influential blockbuster of the century and the most responsible for the decline in emotional stakes, complexity, daring. It made everything TV.

I’m excited for Nolan to synthesize the strengths of Dunkirk & Tenet

With the Odyssey trailer it’s b ecome clear that the heart of Nolan’s non-Batman work is how the true brotherhood of men is craft—and how men related so are rivals, comrades, friends, soulmates, all at once

Cameron’s done it: made a movie so boring that you spend minutes of it a time reflecting on his other work and seeing seeds of the treacly, static failure in front of you
