Some of us are living the “rip Blu-rays to huge, uncompressed digital files and stream them over Plex” life. It is even fiddlier than managing your own MP3 music library, but only a little bit. Anyway, you can still rent Blu-rays through the mail, it’s just slow: www.store-3d-blurayrental.com
Renting 2D, 3D, 4K Blu-ray with catalog titles you can't stream anywhere!

Some other reasons writers might have for not wanting to get stuck on their platform: daringfireball.net/2025/08/the_...
The Substack Branding and Faux Prestige Trap
Only with Substack does anyone perceive creator branding as being subservient to the platform — something that ought to be seen merely as an interchangeable CMS.

The Pencil Factory! The only bar for the gentrifying twenty-somethings in Greenpoint in 2002, of which I was one.

What are you going to watch first?

True dat! I guess, in that case, I prefer three hours of the Red Sox.

They put you out during a colonoscopy. It’s kind of pleasant.

If only one thing could exist, I’d take “Sorrow” over all of No Prayer. But if Satan forced me to listen to one album all the way through, I’d pick No Prayer every time. (Album cover–wise, Pin Ups is the winner, no contest.)

Counterargument to Maiden doing a covers album as being a good way to reset: Bowie’s 1973 Pin Ups album. Did it help Bowie leave Ziggy behind and get to Diamond Dogs/the rest of the 70s? Maybe! Is it listenable? Nope!

Ah, yeah, that is interesting. I do think of Seventh Son as the most Maiden-y album, as in it’s their most distinctive sound. No other band sounds anything like that. But maybe it’s that Hallowed and Trooper strike me as the “most” Maiden, vs the “most uniquely” Maiden. Idk! They contain multitudes.

Yeah! That might be my second choice for most Maiden-y, too. Certainly the most gallop-y!

Galloping, head-banging epic loaded with story and atmosphere, cool changes, rad harmonies, killer solos, top-2 wail from Bruce — if not their best, definitely their most Maiden-y.

Why are you calling a baseball journalist pathetic for this? Weirdo.

The first time I used Apple Music, it misidentified and overwrote custom metadata for so many tracks, I never trusted it again.

I use AAC rips with iTunes Match for my Music app library (weird stuff happens with MP3s sometimes) and Spotify for streaming. Basically, I keep the Music service away.
