my grandma grew up in the area and would say you could see a storm coming for days, and I learned that wasn’t much of an exaggeration 😂

but anyways, it was more of an adjustment than i thought after I grew up with summers going to lakes and woods.

there is it’s own beauty there if you know how to look, something about the endless horizon gives your mind space to roam

my favorite place is actually just off to the east of the zoomed in image, near the Indiana border. Kickapoo State Recreation Area, a former strip mining area left for nature to reclaim. there would be hardly anyone there when I went on a weekday and found some truly peaceful and beautiful spots

I started getting bored the summer I stayed on campus in Champaign as I was just working and not taking classes, and I had a desperate need to find some sort of water or landscape.

I’d look at the zoomed in map and find *anything* promising and, outside of a couple pleasant surprises, nada.

if you’ve ever had the pleasure of living or traveling through this part of the country, you’ll know it’s as flat as flat can be, and there is essentially no vegetation apart from corn and soybeans, except for along the streams and very minimal tree breaks through the fields
