It sounded like three different bands were playing three different tunes, all of them out of tune and out of time. He pushed his way through the crowd to the bar. "Is Melanie in?" he shouted at the barman. The barman shrugged and pointed at his ears. He obviously couldn't hear. Brad tried again, and the barman nodded, walked away, poured a pint of beer and brought it back. Brad shrugged and paid the man. He picked up the drink and moved away from the bar in search of Melanie. The group, an outfit called Poisonous Mixture, looked like they were wrapping up. Brad was sure he wasn't the only person relieved to hear the lead singer shout, "This is the last one from us!" before screaming into the microphone for a full five minutes, whilst the rest of the band destroyed their instruments and everyone elses eardrums. Brad found Melanie at the back of the venue, near the toilets. ...

The streets are almost empty. A few dogs and some cats fight over a rubbish bin. He sees another person, but when he waves at her, he thinks it is a young woman; she turns and runs. He doesn't blame her. If he saw someone like him waving, he would run a mile too. A bus sits on the side of the road, the door is open. He steps into it, cautiously. There is a smell of death, and he backs out quickly. There are no familiar sounds of this city that he thought he knew. The sounds of people bustling around, horns and sirens; the sounds of city stress. No more stress, he thinks. Except that isn't true. He feels constantly on edge. He feels like prey, although he is not sure what is hunting him. He can't see it. He can't feel it. But something has taken the people away. Everyone, but him. And that ghost of the young woman he waved at. Where have they all gone? What has happened to them? ...

"But not as cute as me!" She blows me a kiss and I try to dodge it, ducking behind my mother, but I can feel it fly around her and land on my cheek like a wet fart. I rub my face and the old crone laughs, not a cackle like you'd expect but a deep rumble that shakes the ground. "Leave her alone, Mum," my mother says. "You're upsetting her!" "She needs to grow a sense of humour," my grandmother says. "Now, let me get a cuddle from that puppy. It smells good enough to eat!" Jacky, my adorable pup, also shys away from the old woman. Jacky is not stupid; she can smell a wrong 'un as well as I can. I have never really trusted my grandmother. There is something not-quite-right about her. Kevin tells me I am being oldist and should give the old dear a break.

She could smell their meaness, it oozed through their pores and made her stomach turn over. But she couldn't avoid them. "Just ignore them," her sister said. But it was easy to say, but impossible to do when you were stuck in the same classroom with them. "Look at her," one of the grossest-smelling girls said. "She's so big and clumsy!" They sniggered together, and she blushed and turned away, holding her breath to try to avoid inhaling their vile words. The teachers didn't notice, or if they did they didn't care. She often wondered if it was only she who smelled the meaness from people. Other people seemed to be able to sit near the girls without gagging. Luckily, she sat away from them, and next to Amy, a girl who smelled sweet like salted caramel ice cream. ...

"It's time to cross the Bridge." I blink. I don't want to cross it. What's on the other side? I ask. But nothing comes out of my mouth. "It's okay," she said. "You can cross it. Just take one step at a time." I blink again. I open my mouth to tell her, No! I don't want to go! But again, nothing comes out. My eyes close. The Bridge is there. It has always been there, I realise. It stretches out in front of me. I can't see the end. Is there an end? I take a deep breath and shudder. "That's right," she whispers, her hand in mine. "Take a step." I shuffle forward. The wooden slats beneath my feet are surprisingly warm. The bridge sways slightly as it begins to bear my weight. But not in a scary way. It feels gentle. Comforting. Like being rocked in a cradle. Was I ever rocked in a cradle? I wonder. Was I rocked in the arms of my mother? Whatever. It feels safe. I take another step on the bridge to nowhere. ...

A pencil drawing of a "jelly" alien/person It's based on my 5-Minute Freewrite, as follows... ... You'd be lonely in a crowd," his grandmother used to say, patting him on the hand. He never knew if she meant it kindly or not. But it's true. He stands here, in this room full of people his age, some girls some boys, some neither one nor another, and he feels out of place. He feels as if he isn't like them. Perhaps I'm an alien, he thinks, not for the first time. Perhaps, that's why I can't connect with these other human beings. Because I'm not one. He catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror above the fireplace. He looks human. At least as far as he can tell. But, perhaps the others can tell there is something unhuman about him. Perhaps that is why there seems to be an invisible barrier around him that stops other people from approaching. Kurt, one of the few people he knows who does speak to him, says that the barrier is of his own making. "You have a force field," he says. "I sometimes feel it is like wading through thick jelly to get close to you." Perhaps I am a jelly based alien, he thinks. ...

"I probably deserved that," Dad said, rubbing his red cheek. He nodded towards the door, still shaking from the slamming it had received. "Run after her, would you Kelly? Make sure she doesn't get in that car." I nodded and quickly exited the room. It wasn't difficult to follow Mum's pathway through the house: it was littered with fallen things, broken things. I could hear the sound of the garage door opening, a loud squeaking noise that always set my teeth on edge. "Mum!" I called as I ran through the kitchen and out through the utility room, into the garage. She was sitting in the car, and as I ran towards it, she turned the key. The car spluttered and died. Mum swore and tried again. "Mum!" I shouted again and tried the car door, expecting it to be locked. I wasn't, and I pulled it open and flung myself onto the seat as the engine roared into life. ...

I blinked for a moment and then turned to look at her. She was dressed like a nineteen-forties private detective, all trilby and trench coat. "Do you mean, 'follow that cab, please'?" I asked. The woman shook her head, blond hair falling from the hat into her eyes. "No," she said firmly, pointing out of the windscreen. "Follow that cat!" He sits in his cell, his back pressed up against the cold stone wall. In his head he plays Scrabble. He hates Scrabble. "Define it!" his sister used to say whenever he put a word down, whether it was well known or not. She would make him tell her what each word meant, and if he got it wrong, she would laugh and tell him he was stupid. "Idiot boy!" she'd say. "You will amount to nothing, you know." He hates Scrabble. But he hates this prison more. In his head, he is with his sister. She is laughing at him. She is prodding him. She is making him think. He loves his sister. He didn't always. No, that's not true. He always loved her. He didn't always like her. She was mean to him. But he knew she was doing it because she believed in her "idiot boy." They spent most of their childhood alone. Mother was in bed, with the illness that consumed her. Father was out. Working, sometimes. Drinking, often. And then, one day, he was gone

"If you can't find it," Grandmother said, a twinkle in her eye. "You'll have to pay a visit to the Merchant of Lost Things." I stared at her, open-mouthed. "But why would he steal my phone?" I asked. "Because he can," she said. "Go on. You'll find him up Old Hill." She pointed out the window. "He'll be sitting on one of the branches of the Old Oak Tree." She reached into the pocket of her apron. "You'll need to give him this," she flicked something at me. I caught it. It was a silver coin. I thanked her, put the coin in my pocket, pulled on my boots, grabbed my coat and headed up the door. "And," Grandmother said. "Be nice. The Merchant of Lost Things does not respond well to bad manners." I paused at the door and said, "Yes, Gran." The trek up the hill was hard. I hadn't left the house in days. It occurred to me, halfway up, that perhaps it was a ruse, on Grandmother's part, to get me out of the house.

A pencil drawing of a joystick, circa 1980s. Based on the following Freewrite... Stuck for something to do before he meets Julia in the pub, he slipŝ into the second-hand shop next door. He strolls along the crowded aisles looking at the shelves packed with crockery, tableware and glasses. He comes across a section at the end of the aisle. It is crammed full of cables and electrical equipment: out-of-date telephones, cords wrapped around them, and the odd part of a computer. There, sitting in a box on the floor, he finds a joystick. It is similar to one he bought when he was a child. He remembered saving up for it, taking his money from his piggy bank and going down to the only shop in town that sold computer gear. He counted out the coins on the counter, to the annoyance of the customer behind him and the amusement of the young server. He remembers the excitement he felt walking back home with the joystick, looking forward to battling space invaders and other villains, saving the world, the universe, and humanity from all evil.

Mr Dog, the surgeon, was due to see me at eight in the morning for a final assessment before my operation. "You'll like him," April, the kindly nurse, said. "He looks a bit funny, but his heart's in the right place." I nodded. At this point, I didn't care what anyone looked like. I just wanted my gall bladder out - it hurt! Just after eight in the morning, the door opened and I looked up to find a strange creature entering. "Hello," the creature said. "I'm Mr Dog. I'll be operating on you this morning." "Errr," I spluttered. "Don't worry about my appearance," the creature said. "I'm aware I look unusual. It turns out one of my unhappy patients was a witch and cursed me, transforming me into a giant flea! Don't worry, though! I can still hold a scalpel!" My mouth was open and I didn't know what to say. I let the flea surgeon poke at me with his strange appendages and listened as he hummmmed and haaard. Not to her, but if she were bringing him home, her grandfather would be asking. She didn't want to embarrass him. She loved her grandfather - he had raised her after her parents had been taken away by the Humans - but he could be somewhat insensitive. It wasn't really polite to ask about ethnicity. Although she thought that if she was prepared to consider him a life partner, she should be able to bring up any subject, even if it was potentially awkward. "I'm a bit nervous," she said. He smiled and she oozed purple slime from her ear ducts. How embarassing!! He smiled and leaned in. "I love you too," he said, his own ear ducts oozing a sort of orange coloured slime.

He opens the door, and the wind blows in a bucketful of rain as he flops into the seat. She doesn't look at him. She's too angry. She's frightened of what she might say. He pants, and she can see in her peripheral vision that he's staring straight ahead through the rain-battered windscreen. "They're full," he says eventually. She can't help herself. "I told you to reserve." It is barely a whisper, but it is laden with fury. "I'm sorry," he says. "You don't sound very sorry." He doesn't reply. He turns the key and the car starts. "We'll find something," he said. "Some romantic getaway this is," she said. "We should have stayed home." He doesn't say anything. He pulls into the traffic and they drive on. They said it was just a mild illness and sent her home, the small child wrapped in the blanket she'd brought her in. Outside, winter bit into her skin, and she held Jasmine to her chest, wrapping her coat over the baby. Cars drove past her, icy water flew from the tires, showering her with freezing, dirty drops. Home was an hour's walk, and she pushed her way through the wind. The flat, a tiny studio above a shop that seemed to change hands every week (currently it was a second-hand bookshop), was dark and cold. She turned on the gas heater and sat beside it, trying to feed the child. Jasmine was hot to the touch. She was worse than before the trip to the hospital. ...
