In Ohio, a teacher (34 years on the job, uniformly excellent evaluations) was suspended & threatened with firing because books she had in her classroom library contained LGBTQ characters. No sex. No advocacy. Just ... the characters existed.

The @sivav.bsky.social piece on phones and youth well being is so, so good, and this is the crux of it. I’m no fan of phones *inside classrooms*, but shoving the blame for youth anguish onto phones lets adults skate on the moral injury we inflict on our kids.
If we want to make Americans less reliant on smartphones, we have to address the problems of misery among all Americans. Parental stress reflects on children and young adults, who often witness all the ugly consequences of a cruel society and economy. Direct stresses on youth, enhanced by diminishing promises of a flourishing future, a sense of planetary demise, tightening social restrictions, educational failure, and the rise of public cruelty in real life and social media, demand a much more comprehensive—and political—approach than Haidt can offer with his laser-focus on phones. The danger of emphasizing a single cause for such a widespread and deadly problem is that there is a good chance we would fail to address the range of the real contributing factors.

There is a red and grey patchwork design on the cover and on one of the red patches it says: “why make them? how do you make them? where do you put them?” page 2 why make patches?: Fixing holes and rips Decorating and personalising Political statements, e.g. Black lives matter Recycling scrap fabric page 3 Supplies: Fabric, scissors, thread or dental floss, Needle These are the essentials. The other stuff can be used if you have them, but you don’t need to go out and buy them: Paint and paint brushes, (acrylic/fabric ) Stencils Sewing machine Embroidery floss Fabric transfer paper Beads Other stuff to put on patches Page 4 Fabric: Medium or lightweight fabrics are best as they are easy to sew on. Don’t use a busy patterned fabric. If you are putting a design on top. If you don’t want the pattern fabric, you can paint over it. Use a contrasting colour fabric to your design so that it stands out for example, white on black. You can get scrap fabric from old cotton clothes and socks, scarfs, pillowcases, sewing, scraps, et cetera. Page 6 Decorating (embroidery) If you have embroidery floss, then you can pretty easily embroider a design onto your patch using a running stitch or other stitches. I recommend doing this BEFORE cutting out your patch, especially if you’re using an embroidery hoop Page 7 Sewing Here are two common ways to sew on your patches by hand Running stitch : it’s an up-down-up-down, sort of motion Whipstitch : it’s a sort of up-and-around motion You can also use a sewing machine

front cover of an 8 page zine, with the title “subcultures and fast fashion” in a white box at the top, an arrangement of pencil drawings of various types of clothing in the middle: a graphic tee, some boots, a star pendant, a corset top, a pleated skirt, some trousers and a belt in the middle, and “a zine by @felix-the-obscure (tumblr/bluesky)” in a white box. the background behind is light green page 2: “so… what’s a subculture? subcultures are groups in society that differentiate themselves from the mainstream values of that society. this can be done through ideology, music, clothing or other ways. some examples are: emo, scene, punk, goth, lolita, decora and there are so many others. page 3: “for some subcultures, clothing can be hard to find…” below the writing there are two pictures: a red, black and white graphic tank top made to look like the person is wearing 2 tanktops but its one garment, and a person wearing a light pink lolita outfit with a flouncy ruffle dress and matching parasol. they are shown to be items from fast fashion clothing websites. below the pictures reads, “…but for companies like shein make thing super easy and there definitely, totally isn’t any problems (sarcasm)” pages 4 and 5: “fast fashion brands ignore the culture part of sub cultures and market the styles they are identifiable by as "aesthetics" to make money. this is done by fast fashion companies sending the manufacturers pictures of what is popular online to quickly copy and sell. with subcultures becoming more popular online, their styles get mimicked, mass produced, and then marketed as "aesthetics" by doing this, an entire subculture full of ideologies, music and experiences is boiled down to a word with a -core suffix, claiming that you need all of these clothes, and accessories and decor to truly be a part of the subculture, which is just not true. fast fashion in general also has lots of problems with ethics, sustainability, and copying and many people in subcultures take issue with fast fashion (including me!)” page 6 and 7: so where can i buy clothes? * depop (second hand, online) * vinted (secondhand, online) * thrift/charity shops (secondhand, in person) * threadup (secondhand, online) * etsy (first/secondhand, online) * small businesses (usually firsthand, in person/online) i tried to keep it quite general rather than for specific subcultures, and for there to be a vide price range as well lots of subculture fashion is built on diy, so here are some skills/crafts that might help, especially for customising existing clothes instead of buying a whole new wardrobe • crochet knitting sewing darning/mending embroidery * (screen) printing painting (with fabric paint) * fabric dyeing
